Four Reasons Why Having Batman & Wonder Woman In MOS2 Is A Good Decision

It seems a lot of people dislike the idea of Batman and Wonder Woman appearing in the follow-up to Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, but come find out why I think it might be a good thing.

A lot of this is speculation at this point – we have no idea what DC/WB are planning and therefore its really way too early to say something is rushed or crowded. But these are some logical assumptions and thoughts I’ve made as to why introducing Batman and Wonder Woman in the Man of Steel sequel is an overall good decision.

1. Avoids an Immediate and Unneeded Solo Batman Reboot
Given the fact that Nolan’s stellar Dark Knight Trilogy ended in 2012, its still way too soon for Batman to be given another solo film and especially another origin story. Thankfully, Batman being introduced as a more world-weary, untrusting, and semi-retired hero in Man of Steel 2 (or whatever its called) eliminates the need for another “young Bruce/Batman” origin film and thus lessens any comparisons between the new Batman and that of Batman begins. As Kevin Smith and several others have pointed out - this will be a very different Batman than we may be used to seeing on screen. Having Nightwing as a cameo will also help create the sense that this is a Batman who has been around for awhile - someone who is much more experienced than the very young and learning Superman. Narratively Batman makes sense to be introduced at this point.

2. Expands the DCCU and Creates a Shared Universe
At this point we don’t know how large Wonder Woman’s role will be - but having her be part of BvS/MOS2 is a smart move as it introduces the audience to her character and the actress playing her – thus not risking possible failure with a solo outing – people will be invested in a future solo outing because they introduced her in BvS (a movie that is guaranteed to be a success). Having Batman in the film further accomplishes the same goal and also-

3. Lays the Foundation for a Justice League Film (plus solo films)
With Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman all appearing in the same film (in unknown and varying capacities) we will have the “Holy Trinity” of DC Comics on the big-screen. And with that - once the trinity is revealed - this will lead smoothly into a Justice League film (rumored to have a release date of 2017). As Del Toro said several months back - DC/WB has plans for the entire DC Universe - and that undoubtably means solo films at some point. Its different from Marvel’s approach and I think thats fine – thats a good thing. Its necessary at this point.

4. Develops Superman as a Character
Man of Steel (more so than any other prior big-screen appearance) truly explored and developed Superman and Clark as a character. Through themes like identity, alienation, trust, and ultimately the effects of a Superman figure on the 21st century, we really got insight into the character. The sequel will undoubtably follow this trend. In contrast to a Batman who always initially believes Superman is a threat, it will help transform and develop Superman as a character.

Of course we won't know how good of a decision it is until the movie comes out - but for now, in my opinion, introducing Batman and Wonder Woman is good.

With the way WB is casting this movie with half the
Justice League in it already, i suspect that MOS 3
Will be the Justice league movie. And none of the
Other heros will get a solo movie until after justice
League.

It would be better if this film was followed with a WW and Flash film, especially the latter given the introduction in this film.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

@Reasonnnn I agree. Wasn't it rumored that Flash is getting a film in 2016? Maybe a WW movie in 2016 will be good as well followed by JL in 2017.

@Batmaniac I 100% agree. Its the contrast, similarities, and interaction between these characters that will really develop these characters. Thanks for the thumbs up!

@yassarian I personally disagree. I certainly think some of the stuff could have been handled better but in terms of his origin and arc in the film I thought it had many more dimensions and emotion than most, if not all, previous incarnations

I think its fine that Batman and Wonder Woman are in it. I think they should stop there though. As much as I want to see the Flash on the big screen, I think it would be packing too much in, especially since we don't even know how many villains will be in it yet.

The Trinity makes sense. They will be the main basis of the formation of the JLA. Anyone else is too much.

Oh, and by the way. If they don't put Martian Manhunter in these movies, I will be angry. Especially if they replace him with Cybore. He is in no way as interesting as MM.

Yeahhh, no. I mean, excellent article and well thought out points. But I still have to disagree.

As yossarian said, they couldn't even develop Kal-el's character in his own solo movie, so how does it make sense that adding more characters, more villains, and more members of the Justice League will help?

Everything's just way too rushed. The studio knows they're going to make boatloads of money no matter what, and rushing the movies simply saves them time, effort, and money.

Does anyone seriously think they're adding Batman and Wonder Woman into a Superman sequel simply because it will give us a chance to explore Kal-el's character more? It's because MoS, while certainly profitable, made less money than they hoped and got much worse reviews than they expected. So how do they fix that? Add the only successful (so far) DC character into the mix, cast a hugely controversial actor to portray him, and then shoehorn a popular, well-known, empowered female superhero in what will be her big-screen debut.

But again, nice article man! Hope I'm proved wrong but we'll see.

I agree with SauronsBANE's skepticism.
This is all about cashing in quickly, probably before the major overhaul that the WB/DC association needs (which is DC getting their own studio).
There's no such thing as bad publicity, so controversial choices in casting or neck-snapping only helps them make dough.
Hopefully they can still manage to tell a good story, but MOS set the bar fairly low, specially when many diehard fans claim it was great! Hopefully they clear the bar by a lot in the next movie.

1. Avoids an Immediate and Unneeded Solo Batman Reboot

I agree. I'm not sure how I'll even FEEL about Affleck as Batman so I definitely wouldn't be excited to see him do a bunch of solo origin films right now.

2. Expands the DCCU and Creates a Shared Universe

3. Lays the Foundation for a Justice League Film (plus solo films)

Anyone they introduce in these films as a superhero/villain expands and lays down the foundation for a shared universe/justice league film but I actually think cramming everything into Man of Steel 2 is a bit precarious and could actually be pretty lazy. It could come at the expense of the actual focal point of the film. Superman.

The success of the Marvel films has DC sort of taking a big short cut and turning 'Man of Steel 2' into 'Justice League: The Shared Universe'.

It could work or it could end up being one big cluster-facepalm. I'm already not happy about the Wonder Woman they hired and seeing her in a solo film seems a bit of a stretch for me (she can't act, has no background in acting, is really a model/pageant winner) but I guess time will tell. I hope it turns out well because we need more good hero flicks.

4. Develops Superman as a Character

Maybe.

I personally loved Man of Steel. I agree that it was a great jumping point into a new franchise with a more contemporary feel.

I don't know if Man of Steel 2 will help develop the character given the amount of heroes (and rumored heroes) in the film and the focus they'll likely need (we could just end up with a Superman who is more of a 'reaction prop' to the new heroes appearing around him) but again, I guess we'll see.

Great article. I'm hoping for a huge expanded DCCU

@Batmaniac

I expect a battle hardened Batman to descend upon Supes with a powerful ally, dare I say significant other... WW.

I enjoy MoS, I thinks its a great origin. Now he's gonna prove his mettle with people he will ultimately unite to form the Justice League.

Man of Steel feels cold, empty, souless, depressing, shallow, and commercial, very much like every film Snyder directs.

His movies are pretty to look at, but leave me numb.

I comepletely disagree!

1) The most sucessful Batman films introduced characters to the audience via origin stories. When movies do not introduce the charcters that way they fail even if they are simply recasting the character which in this case they are not. They tried with the Incredible Hulk and failed. They tried with Superman Returns and failed. The question is not whether it was too soon to reboot the Dark Knight...the question is why did they do it at all. The reason that this was a bad idea is that no one wants Ben Affleck in the role except the same ten people who keep trying to convince themeselves that Affleck will "own" the role or that they "believe" in him. It is a bad choice. Christian Bale established himself firmly in the role and brought in more box office dollars over three films than Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man trilogy and to greater critical acclaim. There was no reason to change course and shoe horn Ben Affleck into a role he failed at in a similar circumstance.

2). With an already established Batman and potentially a Nightwing (who would have effectively had an origin story in The Dark Knight Rises) WB/DC would have been even farther along in a shared universe. Imagine if they had a Wonder Woman film coming out in 2014 where now they have nothing. That would have been five films in that universe three origin stories and a perfect set up for the Justice League. This way they only have two movies and two origin stories.

3) The Justice League would have been best served by introducing its heroes as Marvel did. Just like the movie The League of Extraordinary Gentleman no one will care about most of the newcharacters. The only people that do are comic book fans who are a very small fraction of the movie going audience. They could not save Green Lantern and they will not save this overly rushed stunt to compete with Marvel.

4). It will definitely NOT help develop Superman. During the 1990's WB tried this same stunt overloading the last two Batman films with villains and new heroes. The last one being the worst and consequently the worst superhero film perhaps in history. With three vilains (cast with high profile actors who were given top billing over George Clooney) and both Robin and Batgirl the subplots competed for screen time and the film suffered. That is the reason that Val Kilmer stated for leaving the franchise - the focus on everyone except Batman. They are now doing the same for Superman. Even Henry Cavill fresh off the launch of Man of Steel stated that he hoped they introduced new heroes slowly and carefully. Apparently that approach is out the window. This is an act of desperation pure and simple and contrary to popular belief it will not do any more than Man of Steel at the box office.

I believe the main concern fans have is that they think MOS could be benefited with more character development. When they hear that WB intends to add a lot of new (John Stewart, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman)/ revisited (Batman, Nightwing, Lex Luthor) characters into a movie (regardless of you calling in MOS 2, Batman VS Superman, or Justice League), the fans are concerned that they would get a lot of characters with little to no distinctive personality. While I think you have your reasons to believe it is a good idea, you have to acknowledge that there are reasons to think that WB is making a big mistake.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 1/3/2014, 8:17 PM
Good reasons. But at the end of the day the answer is simple; because it's a DC universe geared towards a Justice League film. I find the notion of "crowding" to be quite suspect.

^^ What BlackJack10 said! ^^

This film has always been Batman vs. Superman, not Man of Steel 2. Wonder Woman being in it hasn't always been there, but Batman being in it had. It's a World's Finest movie guys, not a Man of Steel sequel, which is both good and bad.
