BLADE, MS. MARVEL And Other Films In Development At Marvel Studios Writing Program

Blade, Ms. Marvel, The Runaways, Iron Fist, Doctor Strange...these were the names included in a recent report about films Marvel Studios has in development. If you want the skinny on where each of these films currently stands, continue on for a quick rundown.

In a separate report on the contract negotiations between Marvel Studios and its principal actors. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that there are currently scripts in development for Ms Marvel, Blade, Iron Fist, Black Panther and The Runaways. However, don't take that as confirmation that we'll be seeing any of those films anytime soon. Here's a breakdown of where each film currently stands.

Marvel Studios Writing Program

Back in 2009, Marvel Studios set up a screenwriting program for young talent to cut their teeth prepping the groundwork for film adaptations of lesser known Marvel characters. This is where development on scripts for all the characters listed above first began. Marvel just isn't allowing anyone into the program, the majority of the screen writers admitted come from the fabled Black-List. However, interestingly enough, there have been a few Marvel comic book scribes admitted into the script writing program as well.

Blade

After three Blade films at New Line, Marvel Studios announced at San Diego Comic Con 2011 that they had regained film rights to the character. This announcement came from Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada someone that works more closely on comic books; we have yet to hear any substantial news from any individuals working on the film side of Marvel. However, a report on a Blade remake script being purchased by Marvel surfaced in early January of this year on The Tracking Board, however detailed information remains hidden behind a paywall.

Iron Fist

Back in 2010, Kevin Feige announced that 'a very talented writer was working on a draft' and that it was inspired by the Ed Brubaker/Matt Fraction take on the character, told inside the pages of The Immortal Iron Fist. Since then, it's been revealed that the talented writer is named Rich Wilkes but not much else has emerged.

Ms. Marvel

Last May, there were conflicting reports about a Ms. Marvel script in development at Marvel Studios. In light of the recent news from THR, I'd probably say those rumors were actually true. We currently have no info on who has written the script.

Black Panther

A name many fans have been clamoring for, Black Panther has been simmering on the Marvel back-burner for quite some time now. Just recently, we had a new report surface that Chadwick Boseman (42) was the frontrunner on Marvel's shortlist to play T'Challa. Writer Mark Bailey was the last name associated with the script.

The Runaways live-action film

The Runaways

Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce was hired back in May 2010 to begin scripting a film adaptation of Marvel's teen superheroes. Peter Sollett was attached to direct the feature film and there were even reports of a March 2011 start date but Marvel obviously decided to put the brakes on the project. Recent comments made by Kevin Feige during the marketing blitz for Iron Man 3 seem to indicate that there are no plans to ever make this film.

Doctor Strange

Strange is the likeliest of the bunch, and all but has a guaranteed Phase III roster spot. You can read what Kevin Feige has to say on the project by CLICKING HERE.

Other Marvel characters mentioned by prominent Marvel figures as being in serious consideration for a live-action film include Luke Cage and Moon Knight. And there's also recently returned properties like Ghost Rider, Daredevil and Punisher to consider as well. But we're talking Phase III at the earliest for any of these films to grace the silver screen and that begins after The Avengers 2 is released in 2015. In light of the recent revelation about contract squabbles, these films almost seem like contingency plans, options to be rolled out if something drastically goes wrong with Marvel Studios' current crop of films and actors.

Dr. Strange would make a great movie as long as they make it really trippy & bizarre like the classic Stan Lee & Steve Ditko comics.
In 3D many of Strange's mystical abilities would really pop on the screen.

Next,Black Panther MUST GET SOLO FILM.
Don't set it in America for entire movie, show the kingdom of Wakanda!
C'mon Marvel, use all that money at your disposal to really set up the world of T'Challa.

Iron Fist and Nick Cage would actually work. I'm astounded Marvel/Disney hasn't jumped on this! They are probably developing.., but this seems like it would bring in not just comic book fans.., but every buttcheek that was in a theater to see The Raid, GI Joe or the latest Fast and Furious movie. Built in.., 130 budget, 150 minimum final gross if it's War Zone grade or below. No brainer. I am the man. Text this code to my phone and I'll appear to your said GPS for a 2 second lick session. These are exclusive so come prepared and remember: "shoosh."

@teabag I think we're a little out of luck for any movie set outside of the MCU right now, a period picture in marvel would be cool if done right. I would have liked to have seen a more cinematic idea of Cap in WWII that's for sure.

Marvel has great projects ! Doctor Strange , Ms.Marvel , Black Panther and Iron Fist would be awesome ! But IMO , I think it would be better if they makes appear Iron Fist once again with Luke Cage in a "Heroes for Hire" movie .

@ABARy I imagine they might only have 1 more film in 2018, just because it falls in line perfect if Avengers 3 was in 2018 (Avengers [2012], Avengers 2 [2015], and Avengers 3 [2018]). Unless they just give us 3 Movies in 2018, I'm fine with that too! :D

A Runaways story could be done but I think it should be done for the small screen. Everything property they have doesn't need a feature film. I would put Runaways on AMC.

I would like them to just team up Luke Cage and Iron Fist with other street level heroes: Misty Knight, Daredevil, Elektra, Blade, Ghost Rider, Morbius, Moon Knight, etc. I think you creat less risk of creating a stinker for each character like the Elektra movie.

Ms. Marvel and Black Panther need to be Avengers first and then give them their own movie. I think the lead in will help their movies.

I don't like the idea of a retro 70's Heros for Hire film just for the sh!ts-n-gigs of having it set in the 70's. Cap made sense because they brought him into the present and there wasn't an age issue there. How can they make Luke Cage and Iron Fist relevant in a period film that connects to present day without the age of the characters becoming an issue?

Ms Marvel - I will support if it's called Captain Marvel with Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel. I assume if they are developing a film, they will go that route but so everyone knows which marvel they are using MS.

Runaways would be cool but its not gonna happen any time soon, if they ever make it. Most of the kids parents havent even been introduced into the mcu. They also couldnt use the title either because there is already a movie called runaways.

I wouldnt do a separate LC/IF movies. Just do HFH on TV. Spin it off of shield if that is successfull.

I wish they would do ms.marvel, though. I would do it a little different though. Intro cpt.marvel and carol in the first movie. Cpt.marvel, dies at the end, and Carol get her powers after that. Then have her take the reigns in the next movie.

Bp just needs to be done point blank.

and surprised there is a Ms Marvel script, but I doubt Marvel ends doing her own movie, honestly.

Yeah monkeyballs, it worries me, but thats when I think marvel will turn the corner and start doing the darker stuff. If they start taking hits from the big mass appeal blockbusters, they would have to change course. They could make a R rated daredevil or punisher for chump change, and settle for smaller profits. That is when we will probably see marvel Knights type of stuff.

Brian Vaughn basically storyboarded the Runaways movie in his first 3 or 4 volumes. Just turn it into a film and don't change anything.

Runaways, no thanks. Not interested. Never had any interest in, Iron Fist. Ms.Marvel has potential. Doctor Strange and Black Panther need made ASAP! Blade is gonna be interesting cause the second movie is my favorite trilogy and one of my favorite CBM's. That and it's hard to think of someone who can pull it off that isn't Wesley Snipes. If we're going to the darker side of the Marvel Universe. I want a DareDevil and Ghost Rider reboot. Especially Ghost Rider but, DareDevil needs it most.
