CAPTAIN AMERICA EXCLUSIVE: Director Joe Johnston Talks Cap and (Briefly) the Film's Trailer

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: Entering the project, what sort of apprehensions or expectations did you have and how did the actual experience compare?

JOE JOHNSTON: I had been so conditioned to expect it to be less than pleasant that I was happily surprised on a daily basis. I thrive on chaos…I secretly enjoy it when everything is falling apart and success or failure is hanging by its fingernails, but thanks to my great crew and AD team, there just wasn’t that much chaos. CAPTAIN AMERICA ran about as smoothly as a picture this big can run. We had a lot of laughs and a hell of a lot of fun in the process and based on first reactions from the post-production team, the fun translates onto the screen.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: Along those same lines, what did you think of Captain America when you started and had your opinion been affected at all in the aftermath of shooting the film?

JOE JOHNSTON: I went into this wanting to make a great version of a comic book film…MY version of a comic book film. I’ve turned down other superhero movies because I never related to the superpower thing but I love the idea of Steve Rogers/Captain America from the beginning. Here’s a guy who is basically Everyman…actually less than everyman. He’s a 98-pound weakling who becomes the perfect human specimen in the space of a few minutes. Think of the world’s greatest Olympian…the fastest runner, the strongest weightlifter, an unbeatable fighter…and add another 50%. Every feat of strength or speed that Steve Rogers performs is awesome, but totally believable. I think that grounding the visual effects in the laws of physics (and I’m very fond of the laws of physics) helps to engage the audience in the character’s journey.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: The real question fans want answered is when we're going to see a trailer for the film.

JOE JOHNSTON: All I can say is we're working on it now and it's great, but we're not putting it out there until the vfx shots are perfect.

It takes a lot more than the space of a few minutes or even Cap's power to become an unbeatable fighter.

You need training for that and lots of it.

Remember, when the Hulk movies were made, the look of the Hulk kept changing with each subsequent trailer.

@RacerREX

I agree and this very thing has bothered me too about Thor.

In the comics Thor has been de-powered but never completely powerless. I always took it to be like 50%.

Still formidable at human terms. A human powered Thor would be gay in my eyes.

I agree with @ AllpurposeNaji, I hate when they strip the character of all of there abilities They then become boring and i would have never read a book about a regular man with a hammer in the first place.

CaptainAmerica @ What are you on about lol, it sounds like INDY & THE CRYSTAL SKULL... we need realism in this epic WWII movie, real WWII stuff, heck can do all that cosmic stuff later in Avengers etc! : P

Saying that.... I'm hoping for Epic, really am!

@chuckg313
I have to disagree. I think it's an oppurtunity to identify with the character. By showing some "humility", you humanize a very what is already a godly character.

@Lee777
They already said they were going for an Indiana Jones feel. Outside of the movie sucking, the idea isn't much different than Raiders of the Lost Ark or the Last Crusade etc. It's all out there.

Also, how do you real can it be? They can't ground it too much in reality or Cap' will never translate over to the Avengers movie. Could you imagine Private Ryan (after the movie) standing next to Iron Man and Thor? It wouldn't work.

@LEEE777

What part of a guy with a red skull and a brightly colored American soldier with only a shield is realistic to you?! I used to want this to be like Saving Private Ryan also, but I'm much more pleased with the route they're currently going. Indiana Jones did it and the first three movies were believable. In short, this Captain America needs to be a superhero movie, NOT a war movie. Also, surely you know that in the comics the Cosmic Cube belongs to NOBODY but the Red Skull!

CaptainAmerica - 1/8/2011, 11:16 AM
Lol Leee, now i see what you mean, i doubt theyll let that distract us too much from the war part of this film.

One thing that I'm LOVING about this film so far is what great chemistry the cast and director seem to have. In all of the interviews they're so chill and joke around with one another. Apparently they spend a lot of time together outside the set, so that sounds like they like each other a lot. I think Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell look GREAT together! I can't wait to see them shine on-screen!
Ironbat95
Ironbat95 - 1/8/2011, 11:25 AM
@Leee umm just wondering why would you want a Captain America movie where the Red Skull isn't involved with the [frick]ing Cosmic Cube?????
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 1/8/2011, 11:36 AM
CAP @ Thats what we need... MORE WAR part!

Guys @ Okay I'll take that back, I men't more real as Nolan has done with BATMAN! ; D

Still, CAP's gonna be sweet!

PoPcornDude - 1/8/2011, 11:44 AM
my guess is that the trailer will be shown with either with The Green Hornet or any other kinda 'big' movie in january or february the latest....
I can't wait, that's for sure !

"MY version of a comic book film"
Ugh. I hate directors. I get that he's gotta put his spin on it, but I think there's something to be said for putting the source material and (more importantly) the fans before one's ego.
CaptainAmerica
CaptainAmerica - 1/8/2011, 12:44 PM
YES!!!!! And i agree, it should be atleast 80% war. Your worried it'll only be 20% war like Wolverine.

here's my issue:
although i'm glad that Marvel and Johnston are doing their best to get the trailer and the movie perfect. and i'm glad that they are being a LOT more forthcoming about Cap than the Incredible Hulk.
and here is where my problem comes in. if they wait too long, then no one will be prepared to go see this film. granted, all of us geeks/nerds/dorks/peoplewithoutsociallivesoutsideofFacebook (JK) will not have time to spare to go see Cap. and if he and Thor don't do well, then this might put a damper on a few of Marvel's upcoming projects based on lesser known characters. but i am very certain that most audiences will not know what hits them with Thor.

and if they are waiting based on the trailer, then Johnston had better make dang sure that it blows Thor and GL out of the water!

Superb work as per usual ED. Glad to hear they're taking their time with the trailer despite the fact I'm desperate to see it!
