CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Writers On Modok, Falcon-Captain America And More

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely crafted a taught, political action thriller in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And to celebrate the film's release on dvd and blu-ray, they're talking about all things Sentinel of Liberty.

To help promote the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier on blu-ray and dvd, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely spoke to SFX Magazine about a number of topics related Steve Rogers.  On the tone of the third film, McFeely shared, " When we hit upon the Brubaker run of the comic book, we all said that, with certain exceptions,that’s the tone of Cap’s modern franchise. And you can imagine that with us back, with the Russos back, then if you like Winter Soldier you’ll hopefully like the third one, if we do it right!"  Markus added that he's keen to fit Modok into the script if he can somehow figure out how to explaain a giant, floating head.  Said Christopher, "I don’t know if there’s anybody that we had in the wings that we couldn’t pull off. There are people that I’m always wanting to bring in. I want to put Modok into something, but you can’t just drop a giant floating head in! It’s not like “Oh, we have to go talk to this guy – there’s something I should tell you about him first…” [laughs]. Suddenly the whole movie needs to take on that structure in order to accommodate him. I never win that fight!

The writing pair even chimed in on the recent change in Marvel Comics, which has seen Sam Wilson aka Falcon, take up the stars, stripes and shiled and carry on the legacy of Captain America.  Is there a chance of that happening in the MCU?  Said McFeely, "We tend to stay on the sidelines when it comes to the comics. We wait and see what we’ll steal from in three or four years from now! [laughs]."  Markus addded, "I think the movies can accommodate almost anything, if there’s a need. I think there is a much greater need to shake things up in the comics because that’s a narrative that’s been going on for 60 or 70 years, so you’re going to wind up having to do things to it. Ours has only been off the ground for five or so. So it’s not quite time to start changing things up yet. Plus I can’t figure out how he’s going to have the wings and the shield at the same time. Isn’t it going to get all crammed up on the wing? I don’t know… When those things happen in the comics you also have a tendency, perhaps cynically, to go “Yeah, but he’s going to be Steve Rogers in two months…” He’s going to wake up out of cryo-stasis or whatever it is and it’s going to be like “Oh, I need the shield back”. [laughs]."

Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrives on blu-ray and dvd on September 9th.  It arrives on Digital OnDemand and iTunes on August 19th.

A team up of MODOK , Red Skull and Baron Zemo would be [frick]ing awesome in live action . It reminds me of Avengers : EMH , But Masters of Evil might be featured in Avengers AOU ! Zemo ! Skull !

I like MODOK for Cap 3. I would really like the Red Skull to return also. But it looks like they will go in a different direction.

I never want to see MODOK. Especially not with the political-thriller-feel that the solo Cap films have.

Unless MODOK gets a gargantuan re-design, keep him far the [frick] away from any movie.

Yeah MODOK could really break this film if he is featured.

People were willing to accept the paralyzed man with all the screens in Agents of Shield as Modok before they found out he wasn't. I don't think it has to be that comic accurate, like modern Zola.

Well Arnim Zola had a rather beautiful and clever redesign for CA:TWS so something that cool could be done with MODOK.

[frick] Modok. Bring back Red Skull and have him, Strucker and Zemo working together, with Zemo plotting mutiny behind Skulls back. No matter how you do Modok, he's going to ham it up.

I like the fact that he seems dismissive of the idea of taking Steve Rogers out of the suit.

We really DON'T need Bucky or Sam as Cap. We could have another movie or two of Cap as Cap.

That'd be cool.

I have no idea how they can bring in Modok without making me bust out laughing in the movie theater.

Either way....please put Modok in Cap 3.

@Doopie

I really don't use this guy in fan-fic casting but I think Benedict Cumberpatch would make an interesting Red Skull.

Oh yeah, and I read that you gave blood to your best friend when he needed it so I do highly respect you for that bro!

Is Modok a common Captain America villain? I've always know him more as general villain to the Marvel universe, which is why I'd really hope they find away to include Zemo who to me is a lot more synonymous with Cap.

This made my morning:
"When those things happen in the comics you also have a tendency, perhaps cynically, to go “Yeah, but he’s going to be Steve Rogers in two months…” He’s going to wake up out of cryo-stasis or whatever it is and it’s going to be like “Oh, I need the shield back”. [laughs]."
I'm still trying to figure out why Marvel decided to take the "juice" out of Steve and give HIS shield to the Falcon???? I mean WTF, just WHO is Marvel trying to please here? Anyway, glad they (hopefully) won't go in THAT direction. I would much rather see Bucky put the shield on in Avengers 3 than the Falcon (no offense).

We need to see a change in A.I.M. b4 they could bring in M.O.D.O.K.

Now if they could just enhance A.I.M. and put them into Ant-Man, that would be great (and maybe tease the plans for M.O.D.O.K. somewhere in the movie or at the end). Then when Cap 3 comes out the following year, show M.O.D.O.K.

@PeterJSonQuill

He probably is but I would've honestly expected him to appear in an Iron Man related film since AIM made their semi appearance in IM3. It could be pulled off easily but for Cap's type of toned films meehhhhhh...
TelaVizion
TelaVizion - 8/13/2014, 6:15 AM
@CaptAmerica65 so were you just as pissed when Bucky became the new Cap'n A? Or is it that you would rather Cap be "dead" for Falcon to take a job for a little while?
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 8/13/2014, 6:17 AM
@Doopie

Exactly, Weaving was a great choice. I believe he's German as well but they never really gave him the chance to speak it within the first film which was a little disappointing. Who knows, if the pay is right he could come back but the last thing I want in the MCU is actors only concerned about the pay, it's caused wayyyy too much drama in the past.

I would LOVE to see Taskmaster in the movies. That would be some great action fight scenes, like what we got from Cap'n 2. I just don't know whose movie I want him to be in. But also, he should be a type to keep popping up in certain movies.

I want Zemo and perhaps some other Cap villains like Bravo, Madame Hydra etc.

Also I always thought it would be cool to do a story with Jimmy Jupiter. I think for Cap you don't necessarily need everything in complete reality. I loved Winter Soldier, but as long as they continue with the political commentary story I think it'll be fine to let a few more outlandish villains in to the story.

Save Red Skull for Avengers 3! Have Red Skull get the time gem and have the Avengers do a time travel story chasing him though time as he tries to create the century in his image.

This way it would be so cool because look:

Avengers: Loki/Thor's villain
Avengers 2: Ultron/Iron Man's villain
Avengers 3: Red Skull/Cap's villain

Plus it would be a creative way to use the time gem, since Cap's story is partially a lost in time story.
