THE MARVELS Star Teyonah Parris Responds To Sequel's Poor Box Office: "I Hope People Give It A Fair Shot"

The Marvels star Teyonah Parris has shared her thoughts on the Captain Marvel sequel's box office struggles and responds to the notion it fell victim to so-called "superhero fatigue." Check it out...

The Marvels earned a mere $206.1 million at the worldwide box office last year, a far cry from the $1.1 billion made by its 2019 predecessor, Captain Marvel

The sequel brought together Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau for a fun, albeit forgettable, team-up. Reviews were mostly positive, but its poor box office performance will likely result in Marvel Studios moving away from sequels to movies which are guaranteed hits

Talking to People, Teyonah Parris shared her take on The Marvels' financial failings.

"I think there was a lot of talk, and people hadn't seen it," the actress says. "So that's frustrating, when people comment on things they haven't actually experienced." She added, "there's a lot of people who put a lot of their time, spirit and talent into bringing this forward."

"I would hope that people would give it a fair shot by just seeing it or trying it. If you don't like the first 10, 15 minutes, fair enough. Your time is precious. But we make these films so that it can be an escape from your real world in a moment for levity and joy and fantasticalness."

"You do not have to like something, but give it a chance by actually seeing it and forming your own opinion," Parris continues. "And if you did, then that's fair. That's how you feel, and I cannot take that from you."

The Marvels played into the "superhero fatigue" narrative that came after a hit-and-miss 2023 for the genre, but the WandaVision star believes it comes down to, "people [wanting] good movies...and if there's superheroes and there's passion and there's storytelling, and you're not giving it to me by numbers, I think people are here for it."

"I think we say that because it's easy to just say, 'Oh, superhero fatigue,' but I think we want - because I watch them as well - I want good stories with great characters, and that mean something and have something to say."

"I think that you're going to have people who have something to say about everything," she adds. "What I try to do is remember the work that I put into it, the heart that I put into it, the crew who've given over a year of their lives to make this happen, their excellence, and what it felt like to just be around good people who are super, super talented."

In recent weeks, the narrative surrounding the movie does appear to have changed somewhat as the fans who skipped the sequel in theaters decided to watch it at home. Still, that came too little, too late, and Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Spectrum will likely be relegated to supporting roles in the MCU moving forward.

The Marvels is now streaming on Disney+.

This is how I felt Ms. Parris. There was an awful amount of talk before the film came out and people had made up their minds. Fun film that fits well with the MCU quality wise

@Vigor - Would have liked to see the Skrull/Kree war explored more instead of comedy, we havent even gotten one Kree Sentry, 20 or something movies into the MCU

@Vigor - Unfortunately there always is now. I think about all the cult classics and films I enjoyed before the animal that is social media and wonder if they would have made it today.

@Vigor - "people had made up their minds"... I think this is an unfair assessment. I think a good amount of people who didn't were either fans or people who gave it a fair shot.

I personally didn't like the trailer, but I went to see it and be fair. To me, this movie has problems, and just fails on basic storytelling. I don't think its as bad as quantumania, but I don't think it's well told. The only thing carrying it for me was the performance of the 3 leads. I think a lot of people gave it a fair shot, it just wasn't good enough to connect with audiences, but for some people it did.

It's better than people say, but it doesn't respect the casual viewer at all.

The people who did give it a shot are the reason it bombed. WOM is a thing.

I gave it a shot, it wasn’t great but it was kinda fun. Marvel is great when it’s not formulaic. This to me was cookie cutter. Also, blue screen sets have become more and more annoying to me and takes me out of the movie.

I enjoyed it and will buy the Blu-ray (it has lots of scenes worth repeated viewings).

It was better than the first movie. Only reason that one did a bill is because it came out in between Infinity war and Endgame.

If Marvel wasn't having such a bad streak and we didn't go through a pandemic it would have fared better.

@UniqNo - 3 movies made a billion in 2023. The pandemic has nothing to do with that movie bombing

@Usernametaken - the pandemic slowed down the momentum of a lot of big budget movies.. yeah 3 crossed but look at how many others flopped...compare those numbers to 2019 where alot more returns we seen.

It wasn't "forgettable". I seriously doubt people saw the movie and then forgot the entire thing and can't remember anything about it (unless you were taking some strong drugs or too much alcohol).

I watched it about a week or two after it came out on Disney+ and it’s one of the most poorly written movies I’ve ever seen

@BobbyDrake - I’d implore you to watch more movies. Not even trolling, there’s so many worse written movies

@MyCoolYoung - while true, for a cbm this was pretty bad. Not Madame Web or Morbius bad, but still trash imo

I'm going to buy it on bluray or whatever the media is now. It's good. I watched it in the theater with my kids. It was short, my only gripe.

You guys had your fair shot. You came off a billion dollar grossing original, all the characters were showcased beforehand, and there was a huge marketing push.

Not to mention your company set the precedent of calling their customers racist and sexist for not liking their products. You can't expect to do that then have the customers give you any leeway.

@Origame - If this film had been good it still wouldn't have done more than $750M. Different times.

Film had interesting ideas but no room for any of them to breathe and it dragged everyone down. Marvel really dropped the ball with Carol and her franchise. Sucks that these ladies are now gonna be reduced to minor supporting players probably.

I wish I could have seen what others saw , and I mean this genuinely.

Everyone saying it was fun, but I couldn’t even finish it. It’s not bad or awful , it’s just there. I find the characters not interesting in the least , and those who were saying the movie has one of the best MCU fight scenes ever, where ?
I thought it was very uninspired, the final battle location (from what I saw in clips) is so boring and it’s basically just a light show cause they all have very similar powers. Even the villain lol

I genuinely wish I could have liked it like everyone who sees it says they do, I just didn’t.

But it’s really nice that Miss Parris understands the audience and doesn’t try to hammer a message or put the blame on others. That’s a very diplomatic response.

I watched it on opening day, like every cbm since Superman II (with the exception of WW1984) and it was crap.
It wasn't even funny or entertaining.
I thought i had seen the worst cbm of all time. Nick Fury totally out of character, dancing, cats. It was a joke. 2/10
But then Madame Web came along. 1/10

I think she would be even more disappointed if people actually gave it a chance and watched the first 15 mins, got up, walked out, asked for a refund. Imagine millions of people doing that, but rather than doing that, dont go.

I saw the movie on disney+ a few days ago. It was total trash and wasted opportunity. Should have been cap marvel 2, the other 2 characters had no business being there. They aren total unknowns forced on fans and they have been rejected. Hopefully marvel learned their lesson.

“Your time is precious. “

AND

"You do not have to like something, but give it a chance by actually seeing it and forming your own opinion,”

Are contradictory statements.

She’s right in that a person cannot say this movie is bad without having seen it. But she’s wrong in that a person can be confident that they aren’t interested in a movie without having seen it.

Our time is valuable. There are an unlimited amount of things that any person can do with their time. There is zero reason to watch something that doesn’t look interesting to you.

The movie was as basic as they come and an insult to the viewer in a lot of ways. That being said, the fandom is relentlessly callous too. There is painfully average and then there is Madame Web...

I know I’m a little biased towards Marvel but the Marvels was better than a lot of people acted… definitely not great but it was better than Antman, Flash and Aquadude2. It was better than Cap Marvel 1

I'm a big fan of Miles Morales so I didn't watch both Carol Danvers movies bc of Civil War 2 just like I never watched Iron Man trilogy bc I can't stand that monster, I didn't want to continue watching Ms Marvel after they turned her mutant at the end of her show and I don't like Monica as a character bc of how she made excuses for Wanda's mind controlling the residents of Westview. Sorry Miss Paris I'll never give it a chance.

JDL - 3/14/2024, 8:53 AM
The effects of Carol going to war with Hala were flatout stupid and the 'fixes' from Dar-Ben and Carol were bad, especially Carol giving Hala's sun a shot in the ass.

Neither the Skrull planet or the Singing place worked well enough for me as drama. The singing place was funny but the film didn't need that.

Dar-Ben didn't cut it enough. Bad girl ? Yes. But did not come across as menacing at all except for that dying spiteful sneak attack at the end.

Fleurken kittens no. Unneeded humor fail.

The Kamala Khan stuff worked and to a lesser extent the Monica Rambeau stuff at least for me.

I enjoyed it a lot less on my second viewing but I sill enjoyed it, YMMV.
