Bryan Singer's Excalibur Is No More

The X-Men director's planned remake of John Boorman's take on Arthurian legend has been shelved. Singer speaks to SFX all about it and reveals that plans for his Battlestar Galactica movie are still on.

As you may or may not know, Bryan Singer was developing a take on the Excalibur legend which was said to be a loose remake of the 1981 John Boorman movie of the same name. That film is considered a classic by many and while I am a fan of it there is no doubt that it has not aged well. So I was looking forward to seeing a new version of the story. Unfortunately it won't be happening, at least not in the foreseeable future and not with Warner Bros and not with Bryan Singer at the helm. The director spoke to SFX at their annual Sitges Film Festival..

“Yeah, unfortunately it is no longer going to happen,” he says. “I was really enthused to do it. I’m a fan of John Boorman’s movie and it was my intention to get it going after Jack The Giant Killer was completed. The project was with Warner Bros and what happened is that another King Arthur project was brought to them during that time. Basically, it was just more ready to go into production than ours was. That is why our version of Excalibur ended up being negated. But, when that happened, it allowed me to go straight into developing Battlestar Galactica – which I think will be really exciting.”

Singer's Battlestar Galactica will bear no relation to either the original series OR the very successful update. The point? You got me, but I guess we will see what he can make of it. As for Excalibur, the saga of King Arthur and Merlin etc has seen numerous movie, TV and comic book adaptations over the years with none of them ever really getting it right imo. Do you think Singer could have done the legend justice or are you happy his take has been scrapped?

Don't kill me but I haven't actually seen the Excalibur movie yet. Singer making a Galactica movie is certainly intriguing.

It's an early Christmas miracle!!!!

Excalibur is one of my top 5 favorite movies, so I didn't want Singer ruining yet another classic.

I'm sick of Hollywood remaking classic movies unnecessarily. They are getting paid the big bucks, can't they think of an original idea anymore???

Bryan Singer should've been jailed after making Superman Returns.

Say what you like about Superman Returns (personally I liked it) but denying that Singer is a very good director in general is just being pig headed. He has directed some great movies. I would have been interested to see what he could have done with this.

Odd his making a Battlestar movie. And just a comment its not possible to make a Battlestar movie without some kind of connection to the original source material. Its too early for a Battlestar movie but if it was closer to the original series that would be good. I liked the remade series but it got too soap opera and political.

Also I don't count Superman Returns as anything but themost expensive fan film ever made. That was the time to break from the Donner films but maybe hang on to the music just because its so damn awsome

@RorMachine Superman Returns wasn't Richard Pryor co starring bad, it had some entertaining momments but it was just way too rehash down to yet another insane land scheme that just Made Luthor seem like a more evil Donald Trump with better hair. They so needed a new unused villain at that point. If you ask me Man of Shortless Steel should have avoided Zod for the same reason

Yeah it's the same concept etc but it won't be a continuation of those stories or a direct remake. It's just using the name..not even sure if they will have any of the same character names.

Why don´t they go to the libraries for inspiration?

Galactica was a mix of "Star Wars" with the book "Chariots of the Gods", mixing egyptian aliens.

There´s dozen of Arthur Clarke and Isaac Asimov books to film.

I would welcome a "Rendezvous with Rama" movie.

I just don't get why anyone would want to remake BSG after how great the previous one was. It's like someone making yet another Star Trek reboot or something. Bizarre.

@Ror, totally agree with you. Singer was like a God to fanboys till they didn´t like SR. Then suddenly he was a no talent hack. He was the guy who proved that a serious, respectful treatment of superheroes on the big screen would pay off in a big way again after B&R almost killed the subgenre.

I guess the same can be said about Schumacher, who directed movies like Lost Boys and Falling Down, but will always be the guy who screwed up the Batman film franchise for the fans.

Hmmm...I like the idea of a movie based on Childhood's End..Aliens come to Earth, and they look like demons. Oh,yeah, there's something about the end of the world and human evolution in there to boot. Did I mention the demon-aliens are the Good guys? Exclibur was a very very shiny movie...Plus,it had Picard in a suit of armor.Bonus!lol Singer would be better off trying to do a sequel to The Usual Suspects. After all,Keyser Soze is` STILL out there somewhere...

No, Bryan Singer would NOT be better off ruining/doing a sequel to Usual Suspects because the writer of the original in all likelyhood wouldn't be returning with him and the writing/performances of the original saved it from Singer's mishandling.

The line in Usual Suspects should've been,"The greatest trick SInger ever pulled was convincing the world he doesn't suck" followed by "I believe in God but the only thing that scares me is Singer on a movie."

For me, Singer was never "like a God" to me, and well before he did the abomination that is SR, mostly because I have a BS sense (think Spider-sense but replace danger with BS) and it goes off nearly everytime Bryan Singer opens his mouth. He claims to love comics but only a faker would do a movie so unoriginal that it relied on a twenty year old movie (and parts of it at that) and having to re-release another in a Director's Cut to even make semi-sense of it instead of pulling from the wide array of possibilities in Superman's corner of the DCU. And yeah, as much as I love Snyder, he's on my $#!t list too for rehashing Luthor/Zod when we STILL haven't got freaking Brainiac on the big screen.

Even X-men. Singer may have proved what was possible with a superhero movie (and credit due, he deserves that for opening the door, tho' Spider-man 1 and 2/Nolan's Batman did it better) but he still managed to film a team with the combined powers of Storm, WOlverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey and Iceman vs Magneto and the Brotherhood (with a kick@$$ cast to match) with all the action and flair of a film school amateur with the budget of a hundred dollars.

Singer is the second worst thing to happen to comic book movies after Fox of course. Excalibur is one less thing he'll ruin.

I've always enjoyed Singer, but lately he's gotten away from doing original, thought provoking movies i.e. The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil; and is trying to remake [frick] all.

he needs to do another Crime Noir

That's a shame! I think Singer is a great director (the first 2 "X-Men" films are still absolutely terrific, and "Superman Returns" is amazing), and while he is not a typical choice for a remake of "Excalibur", it would have been very interesting to see his take on the legend. Never have got into BSG, so no comment there. "Jack the Giant Killer" should be interesting enough, though. :)

I would have liked to see his take on EXCALIBUR, but he needs to stay the frack away from BATTLESTAR!!!

It scares me that Singer was attached to this, glad it's over for now.

I didnt like the 1st two X-Men films and it was mainly to do with casting. Halle Berry as Storm, Famke Jannsen as Jean Grey. Halle Berry not only killed the Storm character she crushed Catwoman as well.

She is like a plague.

Bryan Singer has a tendency to shit in his own kitchen and shit on other ppls work.

The man should stay away from the classics, comic books and anything with testosterone.

@ROR Really.......Really do you think that letting this guy near the Tale King Arthur and the Knights of the Round would be a good move??? After all instead of making a film that could be enjoyed and admired he was pushing his own stupid agenda which was to try and SUPERMAN more appealing to the female audience? Let Alone EXCALIBUR

Thank GOD they are not going to allow him to Direct Excalibur......yeah because we all need a homo sexual Merlin

'Excalibur' is hands-down the BEST Arthurian movie EVER made. EVERYTHING in that movie was awesome-!, especially 'Merlin', who had some memorable lines.
Trust me people , this movie DOES NOT need to be re-made. You can't make it better than the one noted above in the article. If you've never seen it, save you cynicism until after watching it.
I get chills thinking about scenes in it; just awesome.

...now I'm fired up. Hey Singer, keep your hands off 'Battlestar Galactica' too! Look, you don't suck, don't get me wrong, it's just that you can't handle sh** like this. Troll your talents in some other genre, like romantic comedies or family drama ; sh** we don't care about.
Thanx bro!
