Hobbit Casting Rumors: Are These 3 Actors In The Running For Bilbo?

When Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson get the cameras rolling on "The Hobbit", we know Ian Holm wont be putting on the hairy feet again, but whos the best choice to play a younger version of the intrepid Bilbo Baggins?

According to slashfilm, three names are increasingly being rumored as options for Jackson and del Toro: Dr. Who’s David Tennant; Wanted’s James McAvoy; and Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe.

Peter Jackson will be at the San Diego Comic Con next week, leading to supposition that we’ll get an official casting announcement then. But what about these rumors? Personally i think they all suck! Radcliffe im actually not even going to comment on and treat as a joke. McAvoy is a talented actor, but he annoys me! I can't put my finger on it but he just has one of those faces..still, wouldn't be a complete disaster. I realize Tenannt is very popular as Dr Who and has a huge fan base. I just can't see it. The guy brings over acting to a new stratosphere. When i see him raise that eyebrow until its almost vertical on his head i reach for something to throw at the tv.

Anyway! Rant over. I'm sure these choices may go down a lot better with many of you, that's just my take on it.

James McAvoy already looks like a hobbit, so it would be cheaper to have him in the movie, you know... less makeup to buy.

Daniel Radcliffe just doesnt have the acting skills yet to play such a big role well. James McAvoy annoys me as well! David Tennent is awesome but I dont know about playing Bilbo!

If I had to choose from the three....I'd pick McAvoy. Still though, I'm getting a bad feeling. It was just a week ago everyone was thinking, "There's no way Ryan Reynolds will be the Green Lantern. He's freaking Deadpool!!!"

So...we may end up seeing Harry Potter: The Half Blood Hobbit. But let's hope not...let's REALLY hope not...

David tennant looks too old, but does bear a passing resemblance to Ian Holm. Radcliffe looks very Elijah Wood-like, but I don't think he's mature enough to handle the material, not to mention the fact that he shouldn't get to be Harry Potter AND Bilbo Baggins. That's like someone getting to play Deadpool and Green Lantern... ...Oh, wait, nevermind.

James McAvoy would be great. I think he'sa great actor and I think anyone who saw him in The Last King Of Scotland would agree.

I have seen Last King, he is good but hes also annoying and smug. Tell me you weren't waiting for him to get his balls blown off in Wanted! Hes still the best out of those 3 though.

too old, matches? Go back and read the books, Bilbo was 55 when he got shanghied by Gandalf and the dwarves and much is made in LOTR of how he doesn't look like he's aged much at all since his first big adventure. Has to do with the influence of The Ring.

McAvoy is the only one that I could see out of the three. They've also been rumoring his name for a very long time. Daniel Radcliffe is boring and talentless, and you're right about Tennant Ror, he annoys the hell out of me! (Then again, so does that ridiculous crap-fest called "Dr Who".)

TheMyth - 7/17/2009, 10:45 AM
McAvoy is the prime choice, Tennant sucks though, so Radcliffe is a better pick than that.

Macavoy. Tennant looks like a noodle. Radcliffe is too young.

Adaman - McAvoy (while absoultely brilliant at times) is 'hit-or-miss' with his performances (see ror's comment - I agree, "...annoying and smug..."!). And as mwmcintyre said, the character is approximately 55. Now I realize that hobbits age much slower than humans, but that woud rule out Radcliffe and possibly McAvoy. Tennant is the only one out of the three who fits the age (relatively speaking), bears a slight resemblance to Ian Holm, and is a classically trained Shakespearian actor (he's currently finishing up a run in 'Hamlet' as the lead for the Royal Shakespeare Company). If you know anything about the RSC, you'd realize that they don't take just anyone off the streets, especially to play a role as meaty as the Prince of Denmark! The boy's got mad skills! As for your 'Doctor Who' comment, seeing as I've been a fan since I was knee-high to a Cyberman, I'm going to ignore your comment and chalk that up to 'agree-to-disagree'...

how can radcliffe not do somethin like this he has been harry potter for 10 years its one of the biggest movie franchises of the 2000's hes an alright actor but he is too young for this i think that macavoy is the best choice out of the three i dont know about that other guy ive never seen him in anythin but he looks like hed be on a show like will and grace or sex in the city or some shit like that so no to him

David Tennant doesn't overact. I have seen him in other shows and short movies and he does great without making any silly faces. That is just the persona he chose for The Doctor. I am sure he would find the perfect way to play Bilbo. And Doctor Who is not a crap-fest, Adamant. It is just made for people that are not bitter and enjoy the moment as it comes. It is not for uptight people who HAVE to overanalize every single thing on the screen as if it was real life... cause it is not. It is just a show... so relax.

For those Americans who aren't familiar with David Tennant and his work who claim to have never seen him, I say you HAVE - he played Barty Crouch Jr. in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'. He was the one masquerading as Professor Alastor 'MadEye' Moody - you know, the young creepy guy who kept flicking his tongue out like a snake at the end of the film.

Thank you lalosuper3001, but I've known Adamant for a while on the site now. I'm sure he didn't meant it as a personal dig to all 'Doctor Who' fans (he's not Supermike - LOL!). Let's just 'agree-to-disagree'...

Well if that's the persona he chose, hes an idiot because hes annoying as hell! I used to love the old DR Who shows but the new one has too many bad episodes. Chris Eccelston was great though. I just hate Tennants childish, hyperactive rabbit impression. But each to there own, i know people that think Lost sucks! Can you believe it??

thegreek - They are little people or Dwarfs in society, midgets are in the circus, I've seen them. Sorry, I mean no offense!

You can't have a Dwarf play a Hobbit! A Dwarf has different proportions to the "average" person and a Hobbit has those same proportions as the "average" person only smaller!

I've enjoyed the Doctor Who episodes I've seen with Tennant, so I don't think I'd mind seeing him play Bilbo. He has a quirky kind of presence that may translate well into The Hobbit. Radcliffe is kind of hobbity looking, but I'm not familiar enough with the Potter films to have an opinion of him (I'm just not into the whole Potter thing- it doesn't capture my interest for whatever reason). I'm not familiar with McAvoy at all. I'll trust Peter Jackson to find the right guy. They did a good job casting LOTR, imo.
