Destroyer14 Revisits Ghost Rider (Extended Cut)

Destroyer14 Revisits Ghost Rider (Extended Cut)

I revisit one of the more controversial comic book movies. Is it really as bad as everyone remembers? Come check out my in-depth revisit.

Let me say this first. I have never read a single Ghost Rider comic. I've read a few with him in it, but never from his own series. So this is NOT coming from a person who knows everything, just someone who knows the character and origin. With that said, let's get on to the revisit.

I remember seeing it back in 2007 when it came out on DVD. I've always liked the character. (Who wouldn't like a guy with a flaming skull for a head?) I thought it was cool, but that was when I liked movies for their effects, fights, and just cool scenes. Now that I'm a better reviewer, I can see if it was really a good film, or bad as everyone claims.

In case you don't know the plot, it follows Johnny Blaze, a stunt cyclist who sells his soul to the Devil (known to us comic fans as Mephisto) in return for his father getting healed from his cancer. Meanwhile, the son of the Devil: the demon Blackheart, is on a quest to retrieve a contract for a thousand corrupt souls, which will give him the power to bring Hell to earth. The Devil sends Blaze, who turns into the Ghost Rider to hunt down Blackheart.

Alright, we still here? Good, now you can tell me if that's accurate to the source material. From what I know of the origin, they seem to have kept the core concept.

Nicolas Cage's portrayal of Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider was mixed. As Ghost Rider, he's perfect. (Then again, I'm sure most could do that.) As Blaze.....not so much. Sometimes he comes off as cool, but most of the time he's corny and a dud. From what I've seen in the comics, Blaze is a pretty hardcore kinda guy, Cage's performance was lacking something.

Peter Fonda's portrayal of the Devil/Mephistio was spot on. Every scene he was in was great, by far the best performance in the film. He brings out the demonic entity we all fear in a cool new light, with a touch of humor. (I especially like his scene when he's walking through the carnival and he sees a giant picture representation of himself. Great dialogue piece in there.) An underrated performance.

Now for Blackheart. Portrayed by Wes Bentley, his performance was good for me, except one thing. I know Blackheart from the old Marvel Super Heroes arcade game. He's pretty awesome, with the whole demonic look. I didn't like that they took away that look in the film and replaced it with a Twilight-esque appearance. However, now I understand why. Like the Devil, he probably didn't want to show his real look on earth, so he masked it. (We do get a few glimpses though.) I liked Blackheart in the film, the performance was cool and fun.

Okay, the love interest: Roxanne Simpson. Portrayed by Eva Mendes, her performance was probably, no, scratch that. Her performance WAS the worst. She was just plain bad, and there was zero chemistry between her and Cage. It was just a lousy job. (This is one of those movies where the romance is forced.) However, I'll give it credit that it did seem genuine in the beginning flashback. In fact, the beginning when they were younger were better portrayals than when they were older.

One stand out performance was Carter Slade/Caretaker, portrayed by the famous Sam Elliot. The original Ghost Rider in the film, I'd say his performance was the second best. Other performances, such as Blackheart's three lackeys, were good, if not short-lived. (The water guy was finished off in less than two minutes in his battle against Ghost Rider.)

The effects were pretty amazing. (Blaze's transformation into Ghost Rider is one of the coolest scenes in comic book movie history.) The CGI was a bit obvious sometimes, but overall they were great. The fights were cool and satisfying, who doesn't want to see Ghost Rider trading blows with demons?! And the race between Blaze and the original Ghost Rider was a great watch.

Ghost Rider himself is the best part of the film. Taken directly from the comics, his script is cool, and you just gotta love that motorcycle. He gets his signature jacket later in the film. (Complete with retractable spikes.) Really, his is definitely one of the best costume and character adaptions.

Ghost Rider is the Devil's bounty hunter, and lots of demons are involved. So of course, the franchise has lots of religious references. I like how the film makes references, but at the same time, knows how to make it cool for other people that are not into it. "It is all mine, until the End of Days!" That was good, but I especially liked "My name is Legion, for we are many!" I like how they were applied, very nice touches.

Of course, one must mention the phenomenal soundtrack. This is probably, no, it IS the best soundtrack in comic book movies. It really brings the horrific and energetic feel. (C'mon, Ghost Rider's transformation theme was plain EPIC. So was Blackheart's theme.) Grade A music.

In closing, with a better lead and a much better romance, Ghost Rider could have been a masterpiece. Alas, it's still a fun comic book movie. Not as bad as everyone says. (The extended cut is better, with over 14 minutes of footage not seen in the theater, it helps the film a lot.)

I give Ghost Rider a 7/10. Bring on Spirit of Vengeance.

Um, i think you should wait another 5 years and review it again when you know what in the heck you are talking about. the ONLY good thing about that movie was the occasional special effects - i too thought he and bike were well done. but the thin script, two-dimensional performances, cornball lines in all the wrong places and overall cheesy aesthetic rank this right up there with the worst comic book adaptations. if you are not in junior high school don't bother with this movie, extended cut or otherwise.

@destroyer14 -- didn't mean it to sound that way but looking at my comment i guess there's no other way to read it. :) sorry 'bout that. i was just a big fan of the comic and felt let down, particularly by the villains. *sigh* and i will probably see this movie; then again, i see every CBM so that's not saying much.

@brewtownpsych Haha, it's fine. If I had read the series, maybe I wouldn't have liked the film as much. (Maybe.)

That film was so utter crap, Nicholas Cage was too old to play the part, his fake hair was a joke and the whole flaming bike and skull top concept although crazy enough to pass as a low selling comic, just proves a certified waste at the box office every single time!

Although Eva Mendes had no chemistry with Cage, she was the only thing worth looking at in the entire movie and the lasting memory I have of that film is her in the white figure hugging dress, NOT the FX or Sam Elliot's decent but by the numbers performance! Nicholas Cage and his obsession to play any and every superhero had already become a joke by the time they started filing this. He's such a fanboy he even changed his name from Nicholas Coppolla to Cage just because Luke Cage Powerman was his favourite character. The fact is despite all his geeky fanboyism, he has no where near the face or the hair for that matter, to play any of the top superheroes he so desperately wants. WB wasted millions trying to make him look good as Superman, the fools!

For Ghost rider to work, it would have needed a younger and more appealing actor in the lead to play against Eva Mendes. Someone like Ian Somerhalder who plays Damen in Vampire Diaries and is constantly buried under the panties thrown at him from every girl from 13 to 40!

You get the females wanting to watch this shit, you pull in the couples and you're half way to a hit comic movie like Captain America simply because the lead actor is a hottie they all like. Just don't throw out another old and almost has been misfit like Nicholas Cage who the last time he had three hits in a row was the bloody 90's and they weren't even major hits!

It amazes me that you could bring yourself to praise ANY of the performances in this movie.. especially Mephisto and Blackheart. Ugh.. terrible, cheesy, just plain dumb movie. Cool special effects... sometimes.

Wonder what Ror's gonna think about you thiefing his gig, lol.

@ceejay, whether those things you suggest work or not in the end they are superficial fixes ... i could care less if the lead is a "hottie" that attracts the MILF crowd or whatever. just give us a good script with good actors that stays true to the comic. (exception to the last rule only if necessary)

In theory, it should've been good. But in reality, it sucked azz! It was like watching a Disney made PG film for kids. Every thing from the dead skunk on Nick Cage's head (bad hair piece), to the cartoonish looking cgi, to boo-hoo wannabe tear jerker of a story that just never was. This movie sucked ASS!

Aside from the first Punisher film, this was the one cbm that needed a reboot more than ever.

First of all Hollywood, not every movie CBM needs a love intrest! I know she's in the book but let's just focous on Ghost Rider. Second I'm not sure & I'm just guessing here but I think they ran out of money in the budget. I mean how can Ghost Rider & The Bike look so awesome & then the villains get blue skin & different color eyes?! You can make a talking firey skull but you can't make a cool looking Blackheart!! If your not gonna do it right then don't do it, Hollywood Sucks.......that is all!

I honestly can't stand this movie. It seems way to cheesy especially for a ghostrider film and each fight scene is no longer than ironman 2's fights. Idk I just hate this movie hopefully the sequel will do it justice

Truly, the extended cut adds nothing to the film.
My problem is that this is a jump on the superhero bandwagon, and nothing more. Sure, anyone who has a clue can write an origin story, probably only using wikipedia style pages as references, and push out something of the same quality.

This does not bring anything unique to the genre. Everything is thrown at the wall in hopes of becoming some special effects-laden blockbuster with a Marvel name on it.

He is seen fighting elemental demons, presumably sans fire. No mention is made of Zarathos, the demon who occupies Johnny's soul. These elementals have no backstory in the movie, just forgettable names. And they have no personality... they're just there to be disposable.

The fact that the script actually wastes time on a police investigation is absurd. The audience knows that they can't handle it, and those parts just make me want to stop watching. Throwing Roxanne in the middle of it felt like an attempt at Betty/Hulk, except Betty has been played by two good actresses (Connelly's the best). Considering the police are chasing after Ghost Rider after his supposed public introduction which was a carbon copy of Spider-man (Sony coincidence?), I think the writers felt obligated, as if it was some kind of perfect formula to follow.

Then comes the actual lines, and their horrible delivery. "Time to clear the air!" before destroying the air demon to "You're pissing me off!" at a police helicopter (and the pilot's response....).

It wouldn't make a difference if every actor looked exactly the same as their comic book counterpart. This was just a horrible and unnecessary bomb of a comic book movie.

I'm sorry but I disagree with almost everything you said. Wes Bentley was terrible, Sam Elliot was decent, Peter Fonda isn't scary he's just cool. Ghost Rider's voice sounded like my grandpa when he wasn't wearing his oxygen. My main concern is you should really really read some of the books before you make any type of review or opinion. Eva was terrible though, so we agree on that.
