Brian Michael Bendis Talks THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

What does the writer of the the film's comic book counterpart think about certain rumors of Iron Man turning up in the Guardians of the Galaxy film? Plus, the actor, other than Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey he thinks would be a good voice for Rocket Raccoon.

Brian Bendis was part of a conference call with comic book retailers and the subject jumped to his work on the forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel Now! and then jumped over to the comic book adaptation from director James Gunn. Here's what Bendis had to say about the rumors swirling around the film.

Bendis neither confirms or denies the rumor of Iron Man appearing in GotG but explains why the idea has a few merits, at least from his personal viewpoint.
Bendis: Tony standing back and wondering what the Earth needs from him… what he can do for the Earth, for the galaxy… and then taking that back into his next Avengers adventure is a good story worth telling with Tony Stark.

Bendis also comments on another rumor. This time on the two candidates thought to be up for the voice of Rocket Raccoon, Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey.
Bendis: Adam Sandler would be good, but Jason Statham would be good also.

There's a bit more on BC so click the link below if you want to read their full recap of the conference call. Jason Statham wouldn't be a bad pick for Rocket Racoons in my opinion. Guardians of the Galaxy is currently set for an August 1, 2014 release. It will be directed by Gunn based off a script last worked on by Gunn with previous iterations handled by Chris McCoy and Nicole Perlman.

Based on the Marvel comic books of the same name, Guardians of teh Galaxy features an unlikely cast of characters who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. A U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

Even if it's done in a satisfying way?

Would the next person who interviews Brian Bendis about GOTG please ask him if StarLord is going to have the weird mask and helmet, that we all know and love, in the film and the comic series. Also, as much as I love Iron Man, I don't need to see him in everything and that means GOTG. Let them rise or fall on their own merits.

Good get Jason because he *unlike Sandler* wont cause the internet to LAUGH at this movie. But him saying that Sandler would be good....

Beowulf (2007)'s Ray Winstone would be the ultimate.

While Stark in space with GOTG makes sense, I still dont want to see it. Too much Iron Man is not a good thing.
I absolutely HATE what they're doing with the Guardians in the comics (Avengers Assemble was trash costume wise and for neglecting Thanos Imperative). No faith in Bendis whatsoever.

I miss the days when we got GOOD GOTG news. Now it seems like every bit of news causes rage.

@ruadh- Personally, if Iron Man is thrown into GOTG, it may come across as Marvel not having any faith in one of their lesser-known properties and selling out by including one of their more popular characters portrayed by a bankable actor. Marvel has proven time and again that they are willing to take risks with their properties. Including Iron Man in GOTG would be contradicting.

Jason Statham would be awesome for Drax, though his voice would be cool for Rocket too.. But please keep both Sandler and Carrey AWAY

Jason Statham would actually be pretty good as Rocket Raccoon. Good fit. Although Simon Pegg is my top choice.

As for Iron Man in GOTG, I wouldn't mind it as long as his role wasn't that big. Maybe an after credits scene cameo.

I don't think so. I'm banking on an Iron Man CAMEO, not as a main character, if he was a main character you'd be right - but offhand, it's more of a link to the movies than it is "not having faith." Like RDJ appearing at the end of the Incredible Hulk (sure there was some throw in for publicity trailers but other than that), and Coulson at the end of Iron Man 2 and in Thor. Or Sam Jackson in all of the movies. I wouldn't say any of them are really publicity stunts, but ways to make it all relative.

Statham would be cool, but I'm still rooting for Ray Winstone to get the part. God forbid the role should go to Sandler or Carrey.

Having read the comics I can picture Statham voicing Rocket Racoon, definitely not Sandler.

Statham wouldn't be bad. Whoever voices Rocket needs to have a harsh/gravely delivery, IMO. I don't want a comedian to voice him, it would be a disaster.

@JStark Agree with the accent.

@CaptainObvious: I have to disagree with you. Putting Iron Man in the after-credits scene of GotG does not take away from the film standing on its own merits. If anything it will be done more to set up Avengers 2 than anything else. In the comics, Iron Man is the first of the Avengers to come into contact with Drax the Destroyer and Thanos, so I'm guessing they're using that as a basis for this. going from that logic. And don't forget that, conveniently, in the Avengers movie Iron Man was the Avenger that sent a nuke flying into Thanos' forces. Thanos has plenty reason to target Iron Man before the rest of the Avengers.

Do we really need an Iron Man/ Tony Stark cameo/reference in EVERY single movie? and please for the love of god do not give it to Sandler

So Rocket Raccoon being voiced bt Statham would kick SO MUCH a$$...but it would basically look like when Seth Green mocked Statham's voice in the ITALIAN JOB remake ;)

Finally someone else thinks so..! Ray Winstone FOR THE WIN! Dude's got such a badass voice. I AM BEOWULF... er... ROCKET RACCOON!
Oh, and I didn't realize they were talking in terms of cameo. Stark in Cameo would be absolutely acceptable, I thought they were talking about a bigger role.
KeefNCookies
KeefNCookies - 2/1/2013, 2:51 PM
Just to say why, Ray Winstone would really convey a contrast of first appearances as a cute lil racoon but upon speaking and especially while in battle mode turns into a complete battle-hardened, tough-minded character whereas JS seems to be more charming than soldier-like.

I dunno why everyone is getting so pissy at the idea of Iron Man in GOTG...like, they're obviously not gonna have him ACTUALLY in the movie. Just a little pop-up at the end like The Incredible Hulk
