It's been a while since we've had any significant updates DC Studios' DCU plans, though the lack of news can largely be blamed on last year's Hollywood strikes.
A couple of projects have started taking shape in recent months, including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but it feels like we're still a long way off from seeing the "Gods of Monsters" slate play out on screen...not to mention learning what, if anything, it's setting the stage for.
Well, according to a new rumour shared by scooper @MyTimeToShineH, DC Studios is developing a Justice League International movie (as a side note, it's mentioned that Nathan Fillion will reprise his role as Guy Gardner in Max's Lanterns).
This was to be expected in many ways. James Gunn has said on multiple occasions that he's a Justice League International fan, something which appears to be evident from the superheroes he's cast in SUPERMAN.
There's already been speculation that the Man of Steel will encounter this team in his upcoming movie, with Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner Green Lantern, and Metamorpho all part of the group (who we're sure would like to recruit Superman to their ranks).
The Justice League International team was formed in the late 1980s and was created by writers Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis, along with artist Kevin Maguire. Representing a departure from the traditional lineup of the Justice League, this iteration focused more on humour, character dynamics, and international cooperation.
The team's roster typically included a mix of established and lesser-known DC characters, such as Batman, Martian Manhunter, Guy Gardner (later replaced by Hal Jordan as Green Lantern), Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, Black Canary, and more.
Led by the affable and sometimes bumbling Maxwell Lord - who will be played by Sean Gunn in the DCU - the team operated out of the Justice League Embassy in New York City, working on global threats and diplomatic missions.
It's easy to put the pieces together here to see how Justice League International could fit into DC Studios' reboot. While many fans are no doubt keen to see the "classic" Justice League return to our screens, that's something we have to believe Gunn is biding his time with, particularly after the 2017 and 2021 efforts.
This is just a rumour for now, of course, and we're sure the filmmaker will be quick to debunk this story if it's false. If he remains silent, we may finally have a better idea of what the new DCU is building to...
