Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark's Preview Night Was A Disaster!

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark's Preview Night Was A Disaster!

The musical opened to a preview audience yesterday evening and what followed was a "visually stunning" 4 hour mess that was stopped repeatedly as equipment fell from the rafters and actors were left hanging in the air...

During the show, there were a number of unplanned stops and some members of the 1,800 strong audience even walked out. The entire show lasted for three hours and 40 minutes and although many praised it's fantastic arial sequences, it was during those that things began to unravel, quite literally. Collider have collected some reviews from fans and critics alike, and what follows are some of their (mostly negative) reactions:

"I hated it. The fashion show was horrible. All of the villians looked horrible. That whole love thing with Arachne made no sense whatsoever. They also had 4 kids in Act 1 basically talking about what was happening and then somehow in Act 2 they end up really being in the story. The book is a total cluster[frick]. A U2 song made it into the show as well. Arachne also sings a song about her shoes. Awful. Just awful."

"Ok, I have no idea what I just witnessed. It was a total incoherent mess. Taymor seems to have gotten so caught up in the symbolism and fx that she forgot to include a story. innovative at times, but soulless always. I’ll write more later but now i need a drink to clear my head."

"The show was stopped 5-6 times. During one of those times in the second act, a woman in the audience screamed out (at least what I think was:) “I don’t know about anybody else, but I feel like a guinea pig and I want my money back! We should all get refunds!” The audience booed her. Another time the show was stopped right at the Act I Finale “stunt” and the Spider-Man performer was above the audience. Trapped. Stagehands walked on stage and he swayed and they reached over the orchestra to try and grab him. Took 3 attempts. Audience laughed."

"The set, costumes, lighting, and sound will all be nominated for Tonys. Set and costumes is a front-winner to win. The flying sequences are amazing, but even after they get all the bugs out, I feel that they ultimately will stop the story and the show dies. We’ll see."

"Oh. Plot. Right. That thing that supposedly was there but only Julie Taymor could understand because she wrote it in her alien language on her alien planet. ACT I was understandable. ACT II was bizarre. It was completely lost. The show is meant to be meaningful, I guess?"

The New York Post's Michael Riedel described spectators ducking for cover from falling equipment, stage wires dropped on the audience and scenery missing pieces. "Not even Spider-Man can avert this disaster," he said. Seems like he's right becauase Spider-Man himself, played by Reeve Carney, was stuck in mid-air after rescuing Mary Jane in comical fashion from a Chrysler building that was missing a section.

While some errors are to be expected at a preview showing, that doesnt excuse the fact that the majority thought the story and tone were awful. Regardless of how "stunning" they might be, I think it's clear from the costume designs alone that Taymor has made that age old mistake of deciding to interpret Spider-Man in her own way and in the process will alienate many fans and judging from the above reactions, everyone else as well! Here's hoping that Batman: Live is better!

ohhh come on people, name one show that had a preview that went RIGHT!!! thats why its called a PREVIEW!!!! its not the final product, they always working on the thing til its out. Itbegins is right, the media is totally biased and focuses on one thing and not the whole. Give it time, and lets all hope for the best.

I'm not a musical fan either but Sweeney Todd was pretty awesome. As for Spider-man, I saw this coming a mile away. What a sh!tty idea for a musical. They also made the age old mistake of letting someone who knows nothing about comics ruin a comic book based production. Oh, and what the hell is a Swiss Miss?

comic book are fantasy, and fantasy will do better on the silver screen, as far as play goes; they should leave that alone....

SPOTTED THIS ON THE INTERNET AS WELL..
All $65 million of the new Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” took flight on Sunday night at its first preview performance, but not without bumps. The show stopped five times, mostly to fix technical problems, and Act I ended prematurely, with Spider-Man stuck dangling 10 feet above audience members, while Act II was marred by a nasty catcall during one of the midperformance pauses.

Rarely is the very first public run-through of a new musical perfect, and indeed, the creators of this “Spider-Man” — the most expensive and technically ambitious production ever on Broadway — used news media interviews recently to lower expectations that work on the musical was anywhere near done. But after a two-week delay in performances already this month, which sucked up about $4 million, the producers decided that on Sunday night the show would go on.

Costing more than twice as much as the previous record-holder for a big-budget show, “Shrek the Musical,” “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” took a bit of time revealing some of the reasons for its high expense. After beginning at 6:54 p.m. — 24 minutes late, mostly because of 1,900 people taking their seats — the show unfolded for 30 minutes with few of the special effects that have been the talk of Broadway this fall.

At 7:23 p.m., an aerial scene began in Peter Parker’s bedroom to the delight of some audience members — yet it was halted two minutes later with the first of four pauses in Act I, apparently to free the lead actor, Reeve Carney (who plays Peter Parker and is one of those playing Spider-Man), from an aerial harness.

Most of the night’s major flying sequences — which make up a relative fraction of the show — went off without a hitch, with children and some adults squealing in delight. And there were no signs of injuries, which had been a point of concern after two performers were hurt during an aerial sequence this fall.

The fourth and final pause at the end of Act I was the worst glitch of the night by far. Spider-Man had just flown and landed onstage with the musical’s heroine, Mary Jane Watson (played by Jennifer Damiano), in his arms. He was then supposed to zoom off toward the balcony seating area, a few hundred feet away. Instead, a harness and cables lifted Spider-Man several yards up and over the audience, then stopped. A production stage manager, C. Randall White, called for a halt to the show over the sound system, apparently in hopes of fixing and re-doing the stunt.

Crew members, standing on the stage, spent 45 seconds trying to grab Spider-Man by the foot, as the audience laughed and oohed. When they finally caught him, Mr. White announced intermission, and the house lights came on.

I don't care whether it's Fox or some artsy theater type. Taking comic book characters and doing whatever they hell want with them will always end with disaster. There's a reason that Spider-Man has been so popular for almost 50 years...maybe the creators should remember that, because I'm guessing that no one will remember this crap all that time from now! The technical problems are to be expected, but there's no excuse for the dreadful sounding story or that hideous looking version of the Green Goblin!

I'm not worried about the technical stuff, shit happens. The crappy story though obviously concerns me. That being said, I usually go to new York a couple times a year so if this is playing next time I go I'll see it.

It's a huge production, runs at 1 million per week i think.

I get there are going to be snags for such a stunt heavy show.

I hope they work it all out and it's good, but this doesn't make it seem promising

The hell were they thinking? Making a musical of a superhero with no [frick]ing plot! I hope they were'nt expecting an "encore". Oh and to the lady that willingly paid for "preview" tickets, yes. Yes you are a guinea pig. Now sit your ass down and shut the [frick] up. You didn't pay to see the thousandth presentation. You wanna complain? Just say the plot sucked.

no surprise here. first off yes the story was gonna be gay not to be sexist but when i heard a chic was writing the story to the play i was like this is gonna be lame. second Spider-Man and musical should not be in the same sentence. and 3rd i can't stop laughing at that video of that one chic trying to hype this up like something spectacular. this should be stamped MAJOR FAIL!!!

Super-heroes fighting the forces of evil, singing and dancing as they do it is an obscene mish-mash of desperation and disrespect.

And Spider-Man as live action? Come on, Cirque du Soleil & radioactive spiders? Pete serenading MJ on a giant web? Pass the bucket please, I think I'm going to be sick. Then put it on my head.

When a plan is as fundamentally flawed as this one you know it can never work. Unless Plastic man is the titular character. I bet he can bend a note.

BATMAN:LIVE, however, is destined for greatness.

Batman suits live drama more than anyone. He's on the same playing field as us. He's vulnerable, fragile, and fighting forces beyond his control. He hurts. An audience can relate to a mere mortal with but the power of his own will and desire.

I heard a Geoff Johns interview and he's talking about BATMAN:LIVE with the fanboy fever in his eyes, so I for one would love to see it tour the world. Starting in New Zealand.
