Kevin Eastman Says Michael Bay's NINJA TURTLES Will Be Partially Inspired By THE AVENGERS

Co-Creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kevin Eastman, stated in a recent interview that the Michael Bay-produced live-action film would draw inspiration from Marvel's The Avengers. Particularly for its scope. Hit the jump to check it out.

In June, it was announced that the release date for Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman's Ninja Turtles would be pushed back five months. The reason for the delay is still unclear, The Hollywood Reporter claimed it was due to issues with script while Deadline believed the delay was made so that Paramount could shave $10-20M from the budget. Even Kevin Eastman had two other reasons. One, being that director Jonathan Liebesman needed more time to improve key fight scenes, and the other reason was because the new release date would have more significance as it would be closer the Turtles 30th anniversary.

In the end, the delay has not squashed Eastman's excitment for the film. “All the intentions are in the right place,” he told an NBC affiliate. “I couldn’t be happier to be a part of it. I think it’s going to be a fantastic film.”

Kevin goes into full cheerleader mode as he doesn't let it bother him that the director's last two films, Wrath of the Titans and 2011 Battle Los Angeles, were both critically panned, “Jonathan Liebesman is going to make a great film.” Nor does it bother him that the script, which leaked online, was universally disliked, “From what I’ve seen of the script, it’s fantastic.

Kevin then lists three movies that Michael Bay's Ninja Turtles will draw inspiration from, "We’re talking about being inspired by movies like ‘The Avengers’ for scope and roots origin and ‘The Raid: Redemption’ for fight scenes and ‘Rise for the Apes’ as far as computer-quality style.”

Bringing a new live-action Turtles film to the big screen has been a long process and Kevin reflected on it's beginnings when screenwriter John Fusco (Young Guns) was handed the keys. His version was to be inspired by the original dark and gritty black and white comics that Eastman created with Peter Laird, but Paramount wasn't on board. “Three years ago, I started working on the John Fusco version, which was this awesome, awesome, awesome ‘Batman Begins’ kind of take on the first movie," Kevin said. "It was really interesting, but it was maybe a little too edgy for what Paramount wanted.

Kevin Eastman also participated in an interview with the Examiner. I only included the parts pertaining to the live-action film.

Eastman explains why fanboys shouldn't be concerned:
I like to answer this by basically telling the fans first and foremost not to worry, this will be a great TMNT film. Much like many thirty year old concepts, the TMNT's have been re-invented a number of times, some were stronger than others, but if you look at what Viacom/Nickelodeon has done/allowed to happen with the new TMNT animated TV series, and the new IDW comic series, each has a slightly new and refreshed take on the "core concept," the new film with be the same, a film "well placed" in the TMNT lore the fans will enjoy. If we learned nothing else from one of my favorite "Comic Book Based Films, "The Avengers," that there's a lot to be said about never forgetting that core concept and core fan-base.

Kevin defines his involvement:
General creative consultant for the most part, which is cool as I get to wear a number of hats. From kicking the tires on a few plot threads with the awesome writers, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, here and there, to banging out cool character doodles for director Liebesman, they bring me in regularly to show off the latest landscape, and to get my thoughts, and so far, I'm 1000% on board! I know it will be an awesome film, and the start of a killer new franchise for Viacom.

Ninja Turtles will hit theaters May 16th, 2014

Can't say that anything he said puts me at ease about the upcoming film,it better be good.

I must say that the new Nickelodeon cartoon is FANTASTIC!

I have enjoyed every episode and really hope this show has at least 5 seasons.

He didn't say it was going to be like the Avengers, he only referenced the Avengers in a comment. All he said was it's going to be faithful, like the Avengers was to the original comic lore

The Avengers will eventually inspire a bunch of other movies in the future. The movie was way to big for it not to.

@P862010- (Sniff sniff) I smell a Nolanite! In all seriousness, I don't see how you drew that from the Avengers. No movie with everything you described could have made $1.5 billion dollars on its own- oh, wait... Avatar. Never mind. Still like the Avengers, though. lol

The Avengers' scope? Nice.

The Raid's action scale? Awesome.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes' visuals? Oh, yes.

That script?

Yeah, never mind.

Ummmmm... so I'm thinking that Bay wishes this film to be like Avengers... in box office numbers...

Seriously I hope they do a good job, but not sure of what I'm hearing.

"We’re talking about being inspired by movies like ‘The Avengers’ . There goes my faith in this project. The Avengers was one of the most worst movies i have ever seen. It's a shame, i was hoping this movie wouldn't suck.

The Avenger 's had no scope. It's the reason why i didn't like it. Everything felt like it was on a small scale and not enogh for a superhero team up. The army could of beat The Chitauri. No hope for this TMNT movie.

He's only trying to get us comic book fans excited by saying it's inspired by one of our favorites... Forget you, Bay. Get your greedy hands off of all of these rights.

riseofLOGANX36- The ooze in the comic books is of alien origin. That would be perfectly acurate, so do your research.

From what it sounds like, they're pushing forward with that "the turtles are from another dimension and Splinter raised them to believe they were transformed by ooze" story. I'll be honest, I watched video synopsis of the script that leaked and I wasn't disinterested. The fact is, though, that kind of broad interpretation of what is now a classic story is only acceptable and interesting in fan fiction and one-shot comics. THIS IS A GODDAMN FILM. I really hope what leaked was some kind of ploy by the filmakes to freak us all out because it's the furthest thing from what TMNT is suppose to be that I've ever seen. I'm thoroughly convinced that we would have gotten a faithful, darker film if Warner Bros. had kept the rights.

ONe can only wish it takes notes from the Avengers. THe avengers had epic sope, great acting, great character interaction, besides hawkeye everyone got equal screen time, every character fuffilled their roles. It was just an awesome film.

In taking note from Avengers. TMNT should have the characters simply be themselves. Let Donatelo (however you spell it) be the smart gadget making one. Let Leanardo be the brave righteous one. Let Raphael be the tough rigid hot headed one, And let Michel be.....micheal lol

And I think some people dump on Avengers because they probably would think it wouldn't be so good as to inspire other people lol It was a freaking corner stone people in how far CBMs have come

And I know the very early TMNT comics were very dark. But I dont think thats what made TMNT popular. Im thinking it was due to the cartoon which was colorful and outrageous at times. And that's exactly what the movie needs to look like and be like.

surprise, michael bay doesn't have an original bone in his body. Even when already doing somthing that he didn't create, he is still not even able to create his own line of thought for the thing he is already not creating. wtf.

After 2008, everyone takes inspiration from TDK.

And it already looks like from 2012 onward, everyone will be taking cues from The Avengers.

I can dig it.

But Michael Bay still sucks.

Avengers for scope and origin, The Raid Redemption for action scenes, and ROTPOTA for the motion capture?

If done right that could be really bad ass. But I need to see some footage and hear casting before I judge.

Jolt17 - 11/17/2012, 8:15 AM
The main problem with this movie - based on the script, anyway - is this is indeed going to be Transformers all over again; Casey Jones is a Sam Witwicky-esque character, and what is sad is that he'll be the focus of the movie rather than the turtles, much like how the Transformers movies were about humans with robots, not the other way around. We'll have "Colonel Schrader" and his Foot soldiers, and other massive butcheries everywhere. And yes, the action scenes do sound impressive, but that's all about it.

So he says they're inspired by The Avengers in the sense taht they're going to stay faithful to the comics and then goes on to say that the original script was not only faithful to the comics, but really, really awesome and that they scrapped it?!!
Really?!
And Jonathan Leibesman? Yes, his last two films were universally panned? Why? Because they were both shit. And why were they both shit? Because he's a really vbad director! Obviously! So riddle me fvcking this Eastman; Is this Ninja Turtles movie going to be "Fantastic" or shit?

I remember Michael Bay saying Transformers 3 was going to be more serious, no twins, and no stupid jokes. He lied. The first hour and half was stupid jokes, more lame banter between Sam and his annoying ass parents, and they replaced the twins his his little mini me Autobots. Look, the guy knows action. But everything is lacking. I don't wanna see a Ninja Turtles movie that focuses on a teenage Casey Jones.
