Bryan Singer Talks X-Men: First Class' Azazel, Havok, Mystique And More!

Off the heels of the trailer debut for Fox's Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men: First Class prequel, The Los Angeles Times managed to get a few words with the former director Bryan Singer. Now only serving as producer, Singer discusses his view on competition with other guaranteed blockbusters of the year, the new mutant line-up and gets heavy on mutants hes proud to see grace the big-screen again & for the first time in their new portrayal.

On 2011 competition, “You can never think about that,” producer Bryan Singer said. ”That’s just something you can torture yourself with or stress out about, but you can’t do that and sit there and think, ‘What are they doing? We need to do that.’ That’s the worst thing you can do. You have to make your own movie. It needs to exist in its own universe in terms of perception. Your goal is to make a cool movie. You need to stay focused on that goal.”

When reminded of the prequel's fairly different line-up from the comics,“We have younger versions of Mystique and Beast, so I’m very excited about them and what they bring to the film. Jennifer Lawrence’s work [as Mystique] and Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Beast — these are characters that we’ve seen in the earlier films, but then these are very different portrayals and you have to bring a lot of attention to those.”

“I’m also excited about Jason Flemyng as Azazel, which is really cool character. It’s like this sinister alter ego of Nightcrawler in a way, which again brings some of the things that we like about that character but at the same time has a different quality. And I really, really like [Lucas Till as] Havok, who we’re bringing in [to the continuity] at a sort of a different time, relative to the comic book lore. It’s an extremely cool character. What’s great, too, about all of these characters is that they haven’t honed their abilities yet. Havok is a danger to himself and everyone around him. That’s where this movie is at — the recruiting of these mutants and bringing them together.”

When questioned of Havok & Cyclops' "brother" relation, “Yes, the time line is different,” Singer said. “It wouldn’t physically fit for him to be the brother of Cyclops. We take some liberties on that. There are notions, but, um, I don’t want to give away certain interrelations, but let’s just say there are some things that do adhere to the comic books and do so in a way the fans will get a kick out of. And those things can, perhaps, move forward into the future…. That’s one reason we wanted to call the film ‘First Class’ even though it isn’t the [Jeff Parker-penned story arc called] ‘First Class’ in the comics as fans know it. You couldn’t really tell that story without going even earlier and explaining how they got there and how it came to be. I liked the title, so we kept it, but this is a prelude in a way that will eventually lead to the [scenarios] that fit in more clearly with the ‘First Class’ comics and situations.”

Anyhow, X-Men: First Class is scheduled for the big-screen June 3!

!!!!! FRICK THIS GUY!!!!!!! I work in a industry similar to comics and there are jerks just like him who think they can take "liberties" with things and the fans wont care!! They care...and they are not stupid....Havok cant be brothers with cyclops cuz the timeline doesnt match..??...?? but Beast in the movie as the blue furry beast is ok?!??!? Are we suppose to forget Hank McCoy was in the movie as a human in X2...YOU DONT CARE ABOUT A TIMELINE OR MAKING SENSE!!!!! I could go on but why bother...

@TheWitness- GOD that is by far the coolest VERSUS pic you posted so far. I like how you make it seem like Batman is about to fight Magneto!

@Intruder and Ironfistninja- Yeah i couldn't agree more, dude made subpar X-Men films and a really [frick]ING TERRIBLE Superman movie (nearly destroyed the entire franchise) and now he thinks he's top shit. What an asshole.

It seems now though all the studios are giving Bryan Singer a "backseat" to other directors- Zack Snyder and Matthew Vaughn.

Singer blows.

Hmmm..
so if the 2nd part to this was the original comic cast...that would be good..but then again..angel in part 3..ice man would be too young...
shit. its all [frick] up now.

but i will watch.

I think it is time they kept Singer away from CBMs.

He is all washed up and one day...his true face will be revealed for the evil bastard he is.

~trying to annihilate all CBMs. I swear it's a conspiracy...no way Singer could ruin 2 franchises and have it just be coincidence. lol

Well, it certainly sucks that there is no continuity with the comics, but at least there will be continuity with the other movies.

Shaw made a cameo in X2, and now we finally get to see him in X4 to tie up the loose ends. I think this movie will be okay.

...at least we get to see Shaw's Mutant Strip Club in the movie.

It'll be a good movie. I have nothing against it, the trailer looked decent, and this guy gave us the first 2 X-men movies so...it really shouldn't be all that bad.

I loved The Usual Suspects and I also loved the original Star Wars Trilogy. I think Clint Eastwood has evolved, before our movie-watching eyes (if he was in his 40's now he should be Dredd, if he was in his 60's he should be the Dark Knight returning ((in my opinion))). If you get what I'm saying ... cool, if you don't then you don't !

Complaining is all you people do. This movie will be awesome. Only thing I worry about is they better not cripple Xavier or destroy the friendship between him and Magneto until the sequel(you know it will happen and then thats when you get your Cyclops and Jean Grey). They can't cripple him or break them up completely since in X3 beginning they recruited Jean together and also Xavier still could walk, same in Wolverine. As long as they don't do that i'm fine. Damage the friendship but break them up completely in the sequel.

@adamdsuza...great point bud. CBM's (whether good, bad, indifferent, Marvel, or DC) have picked up the comic book industry off its proverbial ass. This genre and all related products were all but dead until CBM's came to the rescue. Fans shouldn't whine or complain when things don't go 100% the way they would like. Instead...sit back and enjoy cause' right now we're in geek heaven which will hopefully last a long time. So...like you...I'll keep supporting and seeing these movies as long as they keep making them.

PS: The trailer is promising.

I once had a lot of respect for Singer, but ever since Superman Returns, he just proves himself to be MORE of a DOUCHE-BAG every DAY!!
HAVOK and CYCLOPS are NOT brothers cause of the timeline?!
No bald Xavier, when in the comics he lost his hair as a teenager!
No white-haired Magneto?
And a bastardized collection of mutants for the First Class?

This moron and FOX makes me sick. I'll watch this crapper on TV when it comes on NEXT year, cause I don't think its gonna last long in the theaters. NOT wasting my money on faked out Marvel properties.

Guys, you remember this trailer, dont ya:

remember how badass it looked...remember "OHH DIS EES GONNA BE EPIC WOLVERINE MOBIE!!!!"

...and then the movie was pretty shitty.

I see the same thing happening for First Class under Fox's wing...and i feel sorry for those who still have faith...

I'll admit, tho; Xavier and Magneto look [frick]ing badass! Fassbender is gonna be the highlight of this movie.

I didn't read the x-men comics, i did however watch the x-men cartoon when a child (it rocked)! so i don't have much knowledge of most of the mutants but do know some of the most popular...in this movie i recognise beast, mystique, magneto and charles....wouldn't it be a smart choice to involve more popular/well known characters for the wider audience who havent read the comics but still please the fans?
i hear the 'original' first class consisted of cyclops, jean, iceman etc...i know them! that would've been cool and you could still introduce some of the ones fans of the comics would know. correct me if i'm wrong.

Singer blew off X-men for his gay Superman melodrama which tanked and then made a bad "thriller" about killing Hitler who we knew wouldn't be killed, starring a nut-job who is the only one in the film without an accent, which also tanked. Now he's going back to the tit and claiming to be some authority on these characters when in fact he doesn't read the comics.

@TopCat I learned about the X-Men from the cartoons too. There was a cartoon pilot in the late 80's that was awesome but never took off. The one in the 90's was classic. When I think X-Men I always hear the 90's theme in my head.

One time on a road trip when I was like 11 I got the Original Uncanny X-Men comics from the 60's at an antique store. I think I got like 5 of the first 10 issues (my dad trashed them). They were some of the first comics I ever read. They were the best! I was kind of hoping First Class would be like them and although the era is perfect, the costumes are yellow and Fassbender is the shit, without Cyclops, Iceman and Angel (not the chick) and Marvel Girl it ain't THE X-Men!

Singer's films are way overrated! Sure, I liked them at first (we were excited for CB movies 11 years ago) but they don't hold up. His involvement here is why I'm not enthused.

Um...this really raises my hopes that if this movie does well we'll start seeing more familiar characters in another prequel/sequel...

CapFan79 - 2/10/2011, 7:56 PM
@magic8 Funny you say that since Peters produced Superman Returns!

@mynnDAWG Please, it looks mediocre. After 4 of these films can we really expect anything new? Yay yellow suits! I wish I did want to like it. Since I have a nostalgic connection to the "First Class" characters (which of course this film is lacking) I want to like it. I used to like the X-Men, but I have yet to see Wolverine and nothing except for Fassbender and a Russian sub is making me feel like checking this out prior to it being On-Demand.

@magic8
you forgot to mention Supermans 3-4, Batman Forver, Batman and Robin, Mystery Men, Tank Girl, Judge Dredd, Barb Wire, The Crow sequels, Howard the Duck, Steel, Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD, Spawn, Supergirl, Virus, etc didn't????
only a spare few of the many CBMs made pre-2000 actually succeeded. and most of them were related to Batman and Superman.
X-men was the first REAL attempt to take a major comic and turn it into a serious toned movie that would draw in audiences. 10 years ago we all flocked to see it and its sequel X2. we all loved it, then for some reason our faith in the X-films were loswhen X3 was released. Fox hasn't helped matters, but you all complained about the leather fetish introduced in the first film. now they decide to do something different, something closer to the original comics, and we as fans are up in arms against a guy who wants to make a good FILM. no one can deny that Singer knows how to make a good film. but no one can get past their own bias to see the big picture. Marvel isn't getting the rights back any time soon so stop complaining. boycott the film if you want, but the movie will make a good return anyway. mark my words. only the best of filmmakers can make a good adaptation and a good film out of the same movie. this ain't one of them times. get over it.
