Joss Whedon Says Edgar Wright's ANT-MAN Script Was "The Best Script That Marvel Had Ever Had"
Hit the jump to check out Director Joss Whedon's thoughts on Edgar Wright's departure from Marvel's Ant-Man and to see why he thinks Edgar Wright's script "was not only the best script that Marvel had ever had, but the most Marvel script I’d read." Check it out!
As you know, after Edgar Wright departed from Marvel's Ant-Man early last year, it was announced June of last year that Peyton Reed will take over as the new director. Some said that Edgar Wright left due to "differences in their vision of the film," and others like Evangeline Lilly said that, "Marvel knew [that first revised screenplay] wasn’t good." It was also said that Kevin Feige kept asking for revisions, and they just weren't satisfied with what Wright put together. Well, according to Joss Whedon (who directed The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron), in a recent interview with BuzzFeed, Edgar Wright's Ant-Man script was the best he's read, and the best script Marvel has ever had. Read his thoughts below!
“I don’t get it, I thought the script was not only the best script that Marvel had ever had, but the most Marvel script I’d read. I had no interest in Ant-Man. [Then] I read the script, and was like, Of course! This is so good! It reminded me of the books when I read them. Irreverent and funny and could make what was small large, and vice versa. I don’t know where things went wrong. But I was very sad. Because I thought, This is a no-brainer. This is Marvel getting it exactly right. Whatever dissonance that came, whatever it was, I don’t understand why it was bigger than a marriage that seemed so right. But I’m not going to say it was definitely all Marvel, or Edgar’s gone mad! I felt like they would complement each other by the ways that they were different. And, uh, somethin’ happened.”
When it was announced that Edgar Wright left from Ant-Man, Paul Rudd said that he was "devastated," and Whedon posted a tweet giving props to Wright's work. With Joss Whedon clearly not in favor of the decision, the script he read must have really been good. Was it better than Peyton Reed's script? Only the people in the Marvel headquarters would know that. But here's another way you could look at it, Robert Downey Jr. in 2011 said, the Iron Man 3 script was the best he's read in years, and that film proceeded to rack up mixed reactions from fans all across the world. The only way we would be able to decide, is if we had both script in our hands and read them for ourselves. But hey, that's the past and were only moving forward into the future. Peyton Reed will direct Ant-Man and that film is slated to release July 17, 2015. What do you think about Whedon's thoughts on Edgar Wright's departure? Sound off below with your thoughts!
