Joss Whedon Says Edgar Wright's ANT-MAN Script Was "The Best Script That Marvel Had Ever Had"

Hit the jump to check out Director Joss Whedon's thoughts on Edgar Wright's departure from Marvel's Ant-Man and to see why he thinks Edgar Wright's script "was not only the best script that Marvel had ever had, but the most Marvel script I’d read." Check it out!

As you know, after Edgar Wright departed from Marvel's Ant-Man early last year, it was announced June of last year that Peyton Reed will take over as the new director. Some said that Edgar Wright left due to "differences in their vision of the film," and others like Evangeline Lilly said that, "Marvel knew [that first revised screenplay] wasn’t good." It was also said that Kevin Feige kept asking for revisions, and they just weren't satisfied with what Wright put together. Well, according to Joss Whedon (who directed The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron), in a recent interview with BuzzFeed, Edgar Wright's Ant-Man script was the best he's read, and the best script Marvel has ever had. Read his thoughts below!

“I don’t get it, I thought the script was not only the best script that Marvel had ever had, but the most Marvel script I’d read. I had no interest in Ant-Man. [Then] I read the script, and was like, Of course! This is so good! It reminded me of the books when I read them. Irreverent and funny and could make what was small large, and vice versa. I don’t know where things went wrong. But I was very sad. Because I thought, This is a no-brainer. This is Marvel getting it exactly right. Whatever dissonance that came, whatever it was, I don’t understand why it was bigger than a marriage that seemed so right. But I’m not going to say it was definitely all Marvel, or Edgar’s gone mad! I felt like they would complement each other by the ways that they were different. And, uh, somethin’ happened.”

When it was announced that Edgar Wright left from Ant-Man, Paul Rudd said that he was "devastated," and Whedon posted a tweet giving props to Wright's work. With Joss Whedon clearly not in favor of the decision, the script he read must have really been good. Was it better than Peyton Reed's script? Only the people in the Marvel headquarters would know that. But here's another way you could look at it, Robert Downey Jr. in 2011 said, the Iron Man 3 script was the best he's read in years, and that film proceeded to rack up mixed reactions from fans all across the world. The only way we would be able to decide, is if we had both script in our hands and read them for ourselves. But hey, that's the past and were only moving forward into the future. Peyton Reed will direct Ant-Man and that film is slated to release July 17, 2015.  What do you think about Whedon's thoughts on Edgar Wright's departure? Sound off below with your thoughts!

So according to wheadon, the guy who has made marvel the most money, the original script for ant man was already perfect. Yet Marvel still felt they needed to micro manage it like Thor 2 And Iron Man 2. Yay.... I'm still hoping for a good movie with what we have, but hearing things like this depresses me.

And no @McGee, Joss Whedon did not finally admit that Edgar Wright slept with Kevin Feige's wife. ;)

Well yeah, Edgar Wright is one of the best script writers in the business, let alone a directing genius.

I'm still upset Marvel went from Wright to Peyton Reed.

That's like forcing James Cameron off your film and replacing him Paul W.S Anderson.

And people were screaming at the top of their lungs that Wright was destroying the character and Marvel was just protecting their own. What a [frick]ing joke.

Yeah I don't doubt that his script was awesome, but he's moved on now, and Marvel has moved on. I just hope people can give this movie a shot without being all like: "EDGAR WRIGHT SHOULDA MADE DIS!!"

He's gone guys. Move on

"You can still sense the Wright approach, thankfully. I'm really looking forward to Ant-Man after the last trailer. Looks to be a lot of fun. Something CBMs tend to pass up on in favor of "dark and gritty" realism."

You do know we can have both, right?

That being said, I lost any interest at all I had in Ant-Man when Wright left the movie.

I'll still watch it, I'll support any CBM, hopefully I'll enjoy it, but I doubt it.

Srsly doe, Marvel needs to court Wright again. Get him for something else. Anything else. Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, etc. Just get the man on something ffs.

You guys do realize that as much as we rad on Iron Man 2 and Thor TDW, they are still pretty good movies! We have gotten far worse movies of the likes of the original FF movies before Marvel, and the fact that Iron Man 2 and Thor TDW are Marvel's worst is still a VERY good track record. As much as I want to see Wright's Ant Man I feel like the tone of his movie wouldn't fit in the MCU.

Bye Joss!

@HurricaneXavier- You do realize it was Marvel who kept putting the film off because it started development in the early days of the MCU, which was back when Marvel was still ironing out their plans and didn't for sure where Ant-Man into those. And if Marvel really wanted Wright to make the film as soon as possible they wouldn't have kept giving him permmission to go off make other films.

And who cares if it took a long time to get the film made? All that matters is if it does get made and if it's actually good. I could complain about Deadpool taking years to get into production, but it's filming now and all that remains to be seen is if was worth the wait.

The story for the Avengers wasn't really an award winning plot line either. So I wouldn't take anything away from Whedon either.

So also Whedon basically said that the actual Ant-Man is a shit, some marvelites have no excuse now.

Whedon using the word irreverent leads me to believe that the script wasn't family friendly enough. NOT that family friendly is a negative.

Deadpool and Ant-Man aren't even comparable. The same team has always been attached to Deadpool. Not so for Ant-Man.
