THR have revealed the shortlist of ladies vying for the mystery female Avenger still to join the team Joss Whedon's upcoming movie. V's Morena Baccarin and Scott Pilgrim Vs The World's Mary Elizabeth Winstead among them..

Last night Samuel l Jackson revealed on Jimmy Kimmel that his "sidekick" was still to be cast for the Avengers movie. Well it looks as if that part might go to one of the following actresses.

V star Morena Baccarin is on that list. Also said to be vying for the part are Jessica Lucas, Cobie Smulders and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who are still negotiating their test deals for the part of a key member of the espionage agency run by Nick Fury, played in the Marvel movies by Jackson. Some earlier speculation pegged the role to be that of Avengers team member Janet van Dyne/the Wasp, but Marvel declined to comment.


The site also says that screen tests will be conducted this Friday. Baccarin has long been rumored to be in talks for the role of Wasp(and although Marvel are not revealing anything yet I think it's a strong possibility that is the character these ladies are in the running for). She has worked with Whedon before on Firefly ands it's spin off movie Serenity. Winstead is also a big fan favorite having starred in last years highly underrated Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. Lucas is best known for her tv work on Friends With Benefits and has a role in Big Momma’s House 3. And Smulders you will know from CBS' How I Met Your Mother.

More word on this as we have it. I know it's role dependent, but which of these four would you like to see most be a part of The Avengers?

Update: According to "reliable sources" over at /Film Winstead is not testing for the role.

Ah, you just beat me to it, lol! :D I'm a big How I Met Your Mother fan, so I'm crossing my fingers for Cobie Smulders. Any of them would be a fine casting addition to the movie though.

Is it a female avenger or an administrative clerk??? There's an ocean of difference here. And i hope she's more than a clerk if Baccarin is in the running. She better be considered for The Wasp!!!

I would be so happy if Morena Baccarin was in this. If she's really on that list then you can be sure that Joss Whedon will pick her. If Sam Jackson is right about casting a female SHIELD agent, then I'm pretty sure the agent is Maria Hill.

in the article it says that the actress that gets the part will sign for a 9 movie deal.

so which character can appear in 9 movies?

I'm Happy with Baccarin as Maria Hill or Wasp/Janet. WInstead would be great as either one as well. As for the other two, I"m not at all familiar with their work, so I can't really comment on them. Hoping for Wasp though!

I don't care what the role is... Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the only film actress in this bunch...she needs to be hired!! from Scott Pligrim, Die Hard 4, The Thing (prequel) and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof...MEW is a solid actress and should be in this role if it's a nine-picture option...also considering she has the experience in large action films...

The only role that I could see them all possibly filling is Maria Hill, especially since it's being called Fury's sidekick. I think Baccarin as Hill, Ashely Greene as Janet Van Dyne, and Aaron Eckhart as Hank Pym would just make this cast complete. (mumblemumble with freakin Edward Norton too mumblemumble)

Lucas is the best looking imo, then Winstead. I dunno about skills. I have only seen Bacarrin and Winstead act and out of them I think Bacarrin has a bit more range.

Lucas is as fine as they get, but if the role is for the Wasp that's going to open up whole mess of unfortunate posts here. :-(

ChristopherM@ All of the names listed are fine actresses and very capable of playing a role on the big screen, as all of them have done so. The mentality that television actors aren't as talented as "film" actors has no basis whatsoever anyway. Many film actors and actresses got their start on television and vice-versa.

I think these are two distinctly different parts being discussed for these four actresses and Fury's sidekick. Baccarin has been associated with this for quite some time and Jackson's sidekick is supposed to be a no name actress.

I hear that a certain Dr. Pym is mentioned in the THOR script. I would bet these lady's are up for Janet.

they should cast Jessica Lucas to play Monica Lynne and make the character a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. then they can link a story between Monica Lynne with Black Panther.

Obviously it's Maria Hill. I'm still clinging to a naive shred of hope that Janet (and Hank) will be in the film so I hope Baccarin's position on this shortlist doesn't mean that they won't. I always expected to wake up one morning to find that Baccarin had been cast as Wasp since all those rumors about her at comic book stores started popping up.

If the Spiderman movie in 2012 is successful and they fix the costume, I'd like to see Winstead as MJ somewhere down the line
