Zak Penn Not Credited On The Avengers Script; Joss Whedon IS The Only Writer!

After a recent interview with Zak Penn where he talked about his involvement with The Avengers, many fans were worries that the unpopular screenwriter would mess the movie up. Well, Joss Whedon is in fact the only credited writer...

Bad Ass Digest have cleared things up a little for anyone who was still under the impression that Zak Penn's script for The Avengers would have anything to do with the movie adaptation coming out next year. While he was at first hired to pen the movie, it seems that the belief Joss Whedon has rewitten the entire thing. (rather than just improving a few things as he reportedly did with Captain America: The First Avenger) Here's an excerpt from what the site had to say on the matter. You can read more by following the link below.

Zak Penn is not credited on The Avengers. The only name on the script is Joss Whedon, who did a page one rewrite. Now, Whedon and Penn were both working with the same source material and producer mandates, so it’s possible the drafts have similarities and that future WGA wrangling could come into play – perhaps this is why Penn is being vague – but for the time being know that Whedon is the official solitary writer of The Avengers.

I guess this explains his refusal to comment on the script when asked! (you can find that interview by clicking HERE)While this is not exactly breaking news, I'm sure those of you that were concerned the writer of Elektra and X-Men: The Last Stand would have too much of an influence on the upcoming movie, can now rest easy! Be sure to share your thoughts on this news in the usual place!

With an all star cast which includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Rufallo as Bruce Banner, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012!

Whedon is great at writing teams. Anyone who doubts it needs to watch Firefly & Serenity. He knows how to balance his characters, flesh each one out, and tie them all in so they all serve a purpose. Zak...maybenotsomuch.

bleedthefreak is right, he did make PCU... which is good in it's own cheesy way. (i disagree with the Animal house of the 90's part though)... but i'm happy that Whedon has completely rewritten it. He's the only writer i trust to bring Earths Mightiest Heros to the big screen so, yeah!

@tea - I sorta remember seeing PCU back in the day. Must not of been that good. Definitely NOT in the same league as Animal House.

Writer are very rarely responsible for the finished product we see on the screen. Scripts tend to be a blueprint. The main reason a film is great or poor is usually down to the director who is in charge of ALL major creative decisions.

A director won't film a script he isn't happy with. And making a film is a major colaborative process that goes through many changes.

Mind you - the way The Avengers is shaping up Whedon is taking pretty much ALL the responsibility with this one.

Orphix: Somebody CHOSE to write FF and X3 and the directors CHOSE to work with that material. So they were both happy to work with subpar material.

Karma's a [female dog].

That's what Zak gets for screwing Norton over.

Perhaps Marvel now realizes their mistake and has decided to grant Whedon sole credit?

Just wondering, would Joss Whedon have Jennifer Walters (SHE-HULK) make an appearance? If so... wouldn't Cobie Smulders be friggin' perfect!
I know that she's rumored to be playing Maria Hill, but I think a Sexy Green Powerhouse would be so much more Excelsior!

good. everything this guy has written has sucked except for hulk. it's going to be funny to see him try and swoop in and try to get a credit just so he can have his name on a good movie. hopefully marvel will tell him to [frick] off.

X3 was like Loeb's Ultimates...just killing characters for cheap shock value...glad he's gone...no love for the genre whatsoever.

I do not think he will do it great all by himself.
At least he could work on the project along with other experienced writers.

Joss is good, but the whole film will be influenced and directed by him - that would be really hard to make it right, to make everything just PERFECT

I think one man could certainly not stand all by himself to entertain anyone who wants to see the movie

For example, do you really think he will get us ALL to be HAPPY and SATISFIED with the movie?

He needs ideas from others too and not just his own, so that the film willfit for all the fans and others.

What do you guys think about that?

I think the best possible thing you could do is to give Whedon full power over this thing. Its when you DONT things start going downhill. When people meddle with his creative vision or start micromanaging his shit is when things go bad. I for one am epically excited to hear he is now penning the entire movie as well. I think he will make avengers a fantastic film.
