THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: Bane's Back Scars Could've Been Much Worse

Artist Sebastian Lochmann has updated his website with 3D makeup sculptures that were used to create scar prosthetics for Tom Hardy's villainous role, Bane. Also check out Sebastian's 2D and 3D work on Tim Burton's Dark Shadows.

Sebastian Lochmann was given the task of designing the nasty scars that litter Bane's back, from the neck down to the lumbar. The prosthetic is meant to convey numerous amounts of operations that were performed on Bane's back. As you can see in the images below that scar could've been much nastier than the final product that you can see in the image above.

The Dark Knight Rises is now playing at your local theater. The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

They should've left Hardy's tattoos instead of covering them

The scar was stupid because it was hardly noticeable and made no indication to any surgery or anything. It didn't do anything for Bane's character.

@SetGecko I agree I think when he's talking 2 Dagget 2.The camera angle made him look way taller than Tom actually is.Great scene 2.

That scene would have been perfect, had Daggett not asked that idiotic question....

"What are you?"

SetGecko, when guys need to look huge for the camera they keep weights on set so they can get pumped up before each scene. If he looked small in any scenes it was likely because he just didn't lift weights before the take.

You only saw his scars in the scene where Gordon is dragged into Banes sewer HQ

They should've definitely made the scars bigger. Maybe not as big as the concept design, but much bigger than the puny scars shown in the movie. They really don't hint that much at surgery - at least nothing too serious.

These scars would've made sense. He has breathing problems so the doctors tried doing surgery on his lungs or something like that. But whatever... It's Nolan's movie! *rolls eyes*

Oh and they used camera angles and film tricks to make Hardy look taller. Almost all of his scenes were close up and the camera was looking up at him to make him seem huge (which was very obvious and distracting, to me at least). They used some CGI during the sewer battle scene to make him tower over Batman.

I know a lot of people have said even before this post, "I hope it's on the DVD" or something similar to that, but Nolan stated that he'd never put out deleted scenes anymore. Said he felt it was disrespectful to the actor/actress to show something that wasn't good enough for final cut. Hate that idea because I would've loved Ro see some behind the scenes features of Heath and Bale, but I'll respect it.

Bit more violent??? You see people being shot with clouds of blood! I thought it was violent enough.

And about Bane's spine, the scare was fine. But I wouldn't've mind if it was a bit more gross.

I'm guessing that the delivery system for Bane's Anesthetic Gas (Venom), was partly internal? Maybe the main hose ran up his back under the skin, and that's what the scar was? Because there was only a thin cord, or tube leading up into the mask from inside his vest, which was only visible one or two times.

There was never a scene where we saw him injecting anything into the mask, nor was there any side effects mentioned, super strength or otherwise.

Yet he is seen snapping a small steel chain on the plane prologue, and gouging small holes in concrete pillars w/ his bare hands after his mask has been damaged. Though both example are humanly possible after years of practice and build up, one can conclude that the anesthetic does provide a certain heightened pain tolerance. However, this is merely an assumption I'm fishing for, desperately, because it was not clearly brought to light in the film.

They didn't mention the scars or even show them really in the movie. There was no point of even having them.

tom hardy's roided up back in that picture with all the pimples. the crazy thing is he didn't even get that ripped. in shots with his arms out he didn't look big. he actually looked bigger when other people where in the shots with him because of the camera angles they used and any other movie magic that they through in.

I kind of wish they had gone with one of those scars because if there was one logical issue I had with the film (and I had next to none) it was that we never actually see what is causing Bane so much pain. Even without his shirt on, we never see any major scars or cuts on his torso or face (or at least from what we can see) to indicate such a harsh beating that he had sustained (though the injury could have been internal).

Could have been an allergic reaction, or simply his skin's reaction to hair-removal. It's happened to me before, and I certainly don't take steroids.

The 'oh shit' expression on the morphine addicted doctor's face when he removes the bandages from his botched surgery.. Man, that sucks. I would have gone with the scars from picture #2.

Bane kind of reminded me of Renard from 'The World is Not Enough'. He was shot in the head and because of the bullet lodged in his brain, he had no sense of pain so he kept getting stronger and stronger because he couldn't feel his body screaming out in pain to stop. Kind of interesting way to explain Bane's extraordinary strength.

@Hybrid 0027, go [frick] yourself. Dick Grayson's an awesome character. If you think Robin and think of the 60s Robin, remember this, Batman was gay back then too.

Read some newer comics (as in ones that came out in the past 30 years) and educate yourself, fool.

I dont know what the thing with his back was but they definitely did something to his face in that pit. Remember when Talia comes back to get him and he is sitting in their with that bloody rag on his face. If i remember right the doctor even said they mutilated his face or something. Maybe they mutilated his spine too. :P

Anyway that raises the question.

I honestly loved the movie (TDKR) but here are a few things that did bother me. Bane was great, but that's how you off him? A blast form the cycle? It could've been better. Batman shoul've taken him out. As for one big thing that annoyed me, so Bruce climbs out of the hole right? Then.. two seconds later he's back in gotham, meeting catwoman, clean shaved and ready to go? C'mon, way too rushed.
