COMICS: A New Report Finds That The Comic Book Industry Grew By 6% Last Year

Though fans regularly complain that DC and Marvel are recycling comic book storylines, the industry as a whole, appears to be doing just fine according to a new report on 2016 comic book sales.

Comichron and ICv2 have teamed up for a joint report on the financial state of the comic book industry in 2016 and they found that the sales are actually up.  Total sales clock in at a jaw-dropping $1.085 billion, up 6% from 2015.  But it wasn't digital sales or cash transactions for single issue comics driving the growth.  It seems the additional $55 million in sales can all be attributed to graphic novel purchases from book stores.

Titles spearheading the impressive growth include several Star Wars tpb collections from Marvel, several volume collections from Image such as Saga,  Wicked & Divine and of course The Walking Dead.

"It's gratifying to see continued growth in the audience for graphic novels," said ICv2's Milton Griepp.  He added,  "This represents growth in the broadest part of the market, where increased variety of content is being found by new audiences for comics, including kids and women."

Comichron's John Jackson Miller added, "The fact that [2016] pulled even, thanks in part to DC's Rebirth event, was remarkable-and the book channel's strength was even more so."

I'm curious how much this has to do with the big two making movies and if in the future the Hellboy movie, plus Dark Horse will help grow the comics industry.

@BlackIceJoe - I am pretty sure that recent comic book movies had a huge impact on comic book sales and spread of the comic book culture around the world. Nowadays reading comic books is not something "nerdy" or "geeky" but it is "cool" because you have celebrities like RDJ and others playing comic book characters that is why it is "cool" if you know the source material.

@Selonian - I feel like that is the case and it is crazy to see how people look at comic book fans these days compared to a decade ago, let alone two decades.

I'm proud to say I've been a comic book fan before being one was cool.

@Selonian

I'm an example of this. Started reading DC after MoS, and marvel after civil war.

Ended up liking the books a lot more than the movies, and I've been reading almost every day since.

For me, it was like "that was so [frick]ing cool, I need more now." I imagine a lot of movie-goers have done the same thing. Only problem is, now the movies piss me off for ignoring the most interesting aspects of the books. Some movies have wonderful adaptations. But with movies like civil war, gotg, and bvs, I realize they didn't adapt the best aspects of the characters and stories, which is a bummer.

Drax is so much more than a walking fart joke.

@BlackIceJoe - In the report, individual comic book sales remained relatively the same, but a spike in graphic novel sales is what led to the increase.

@Doomsday8888 - rebirth started off amazing and is still going strong it really made fall back in love with comics I really wish marvel would take note of this and do something similar I really haven't bothered got anything from them this year except for civil war 2 I'm really upset with what they did with the xmen

@Doomsday8888 - Actually I think it's the flood of indie comic books that reaches the out of the normal demographic. Manga is still king, nothing sells better than One Piece.

I wonder if this means comic books will become worth stuff again.

I bet most of those "graphic novel" purchases were trades of DC stuff. Which means we're probably not getting a DC Unlimited digital subscription service anytime soon.

@soberchimera - that sucks so bad. Even though I like DC better, and read it for a few years longer, ive read 100x more marvel because of unlimited.

I also get to check out all the cool books from the past with ease.

Hunting down full arcs of DC stuff, or adjusting my budget to allow for more trade purchases.. seems archaic after an unlimited subscription.

Forget about the dceu vs mcu crap, Marvel wins by default because DC's entire catalog is a [frick]ing BITCH to get your hands on.

Very great news. I'm starting to get attached to more comics in general nowadays.
