Comichron and ICv2 have teamed up for a joint report on the financial state of the comic book industry in 2016 and they found that the sales are actually up. Total sales clock in at a jaw-dropping $1.085 billion, up 6% from 2015. But it wasn't digital sales or cash transactions for single issue comics driving the growth. It seems the additional $55 million in sales can all be attributed to graphic novel purchases from book stores.
Titles spearheading the impressive growth include several
Star Wars tpb collections from Marvel, several volume collections from Image such as
Saga,
Wicked & Divine and of course
The Walking Dead.
"
It's gratifying to see continued growth in the audience for graphic novels," said ICv2's Milton Griepp. He added, "
This represents growth in the broadest part of the market, where increased variety of content is being found by new audiences for comics, including kids and women."
Comichron's John Jackson Miller added, "
The fact that [2016] pulled even, thanks in part to DC's Rebirth event, was remarkable-and the book channel's strength was even more so."
