NYCC '11: Captain Marvel Coming To DC's New 52

News out of New York Comic Con has broken that Captain Marvel will be making his way to DC's new 52, being brought to life by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank

One of the major disappointments from DC's new 52 is that Captain Marvel, aka Shazam, was no where to be found. No title of his own no cameo in another title nothing. It was announced today at New York Comic Con that Captain Marvel will indeed be making a debut in the new 52 very very soon. Geoff Johns will write a back up adventure tale, entitled The Curse Of Shazam, in Justice League. Gary Frank will draw the story with no mention on what the story will be or when we will even see it.

From DC:

Big news out of New York Comic Con: Shazam is coming to DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. Written by NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Geoff Johns and illustrated by acclaimed artist Gary Frank, THE CURSE OF SHAZAM will unfold as a back-up adventure that will appear in JUSTICE LEAGUE – also written by Johns. What manner of adventure is in store for Billy Batson and his big, red alter ego? It’s too soon to say for sure, but you can bet that THE SOURCE will have all the updates, so stay tuned.

Looks like DC listened to fans who were complaining that Captain Marvel was not apart of the new 52. As stated above the has been no word on when the story will come to fruition, but be on the look out for Shazam soon.

@TheGDSuperguy They should cut out Catwoman, I'm not bothering with the second issue. I also liked Batman The Dark Knight, but it felt pretty tacked on as well.

How badly will they screw him up in the "non-reboot"?

back up story in Justice league? It will still have the same amount of pages just shorter League stories because Lee can't meet deadlines.gotta fill up those pages for 2,99 right?

MaddMonkk, it's $3.99 an issue for Justice League.

I would've preferred Captain Marvel be in his own title, not as a back-up in another title.
Can't be displeased with Gary Frank on the artwork though.

This could be the best thing to come out this utterly unnecessary reboot - bring back Billy as Captain Marvel, bring back the Wizard, forget all that crap they pulled after Infinite Crisis.

Although... I can't complain too much about anything that brought us this:

Once this gets going you can be sure that a Captain Marvel movie won't be far behind. Remember the rumors on casting when they talked about it a few years back. jake gyllenhaal as Captain Marvel and The Rock as Black Adam. Hope this comic does well.

YES can't wait!

Now they need to give Cyborg a series to himself and I'll be truly happy.

That ^ sounds really stupid but think about it . . . everyone in the League has a book whilst Supes has 2 and Bats has 4 if you count B&R

Cy is good enough for the JLA but not for his own book?

@froggy -- agreed, keep it simple and classic. This has huge potential for a good movie too, a kids movie actually. The feel of the movie should be like "Stand By Me" or something, which was well-liked by kids b/c it featured kids and kid themes (cartoons, bullies, going on adventures) but it was essentially an adult tragedy. If they could do that and inject a little Reeves style superman rock 'em sock 'em well then, hot dog we've got a wiener. Shazam!!!

That's not such a bad idea, having short back-up features in each of the 52 books. DC was doing this in the 70s with Action, Detective, etc. Good way to gauge and nurture a good title. It would also be a great venue for new talent. Why not do this? Capt. Marvel as a back-up feature on the Justice League sounds GREAT.

Suicide Squad or Secret Six on Batman Incorporated. Birds of Prey on Wonder Woman. JSA on The FLASH. House of Mystery on Swamp Thing. El Diablo on Jonah Hex's All Star Western. Hellblazer on Justice League Dark.

The back-ups could even be a mini-series of some sort. Finite stories in several installments.

MAKE THE MOVIE!!!! This character has SOOO much big screen potential! Has the Fantasy to draw the Potter heads, and the potential to have the audience completely fall in love with the character. An Orphan given this great power. The first 45 minutes could be about Billy and audiences would love it.

And if you do a heavy origin story it would be a relatively cheap film to make. The last 45 minutes could be all the action, discovering the power and a lower end villan leading up to the sequal with Black Adam.

It's about time. They had some good story arcs but really left the character in a shitty position at the end of the Final Crisis and I hope that some of that is ignored. I love the anti-hero position of Black Adam and hope that they keep that in Black Adam's character. Black Adam is much better as an anti-hero rather than another archetypical "Hot damn I'm EVIL!!" kind of character.

Maybe they will "update" him by making him angry, no respect for cops or the law, have a mistrust of humans to the point of racisim, and alter a the color of his belt. Captain Marvel is a good Character but if DC is rennovating the So called boy scout type of character with high moral grounds won't they do simular demolition to the Captain Marvel character??

They could go back to the old Serial maybe with Captain Marvel hurling people of bridges hahhahaha

Meanwhile, they put old school Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens to write/draw Superman.

I can't understand these guys!
