Ranting with Movieline at the South by Southwest (SXSW), Brian Taylor, co-director (with Mark Neveldine) of the Nicolas Cage-starrer Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance, speaks in-depth on the sequel.

How will you accomplish surprising people and re-fashioning the Ghost Rider origin story, like Cage suggested?
"We basically completely re-envisioned the whole start of the character, and actually had to re-engineer the origin of the Ghost Rider. The whole mythology behind the Ghost Rider that existed in the comic books never really made sense to me, so we sort of had to re-engineer the entire back-story of the Ghost Rider into something new."

How do you overcome the challenges of re-introducing audiences to an origin when they’ve already seen him take a different path with the character?
"We’re just looking at it as an evolution. The movie takes place years later. We’re not disowning the first movie but this Ghost Rider is an evolved form of the previous Ghost Rider. And the mythology that went behind it is stuff that never got delved into in the first movie, anyway. Like, they don’t talk about who the demon is from when Johnny Blaze becomes the Ghost Rider. We get into that and really get into who that guy is, what his story is, and what makes GR the way that he is."

Were you aware of the randomly goofy photos of Nic Cage escaped out into the world?
"I’m not sure the ones you’re talking about, but I’d love to see them if you could send me a link. [Laughs] But I’ve got to tell you that working with him was the absolute highlight of that experience. He’s the best. Every day that Nic was on the call sheet and we were coming in to shoot him was a total rush. Shooting action is boring, shooting car crashes and all that stuff. But shooting a Nic Cage performance is a total adrenaline rush."

Head over to Movieline for the full interview, where Taylor touches on potential Crank sequels and more. With Nicolas Cage returning as the Brimstone biker, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vegeance also stars Idris Elba, Ciaran Hinds, and Christopher Lamber, hitting theaters February 17, 2012 in 3D!

i dont rate Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor as directors found their movies pointless

Obviously they're retarded, in what way does the origin not make sense, Crash Simpson is dying of cancer, Blaze summons Mephisto, makes a deal, Crash dies in a crash, his soul is bonded to Zarathos, he turns into Ghost Rider.

Let's look at what these guys have given us so far: Crank, Gamer,

If it looks like a turd and smells like a turd it's a turd.

@ soberchimera61 seriously, gosh! this movie is gonna suck balls then, those movies were horrible! The first was a grade D movie, but we all knew it was gonna be, look at the casting! It was cheesy as hell, which IMO is the definition of Ghost Rider as a comic book character, sorry but it is. You'd think after Kick-Ass He would've stepped his game up, cause he was AMAZING as Big Daddy, but then he goes back to the shitty movies. Eh, I'll watch the bootleg copy online rather than paying 10 bucks for it.

meh, love Crank & Crank 2 but even I will admit they were a load of cheesy crap & Ghost Rider will go the exact same way

Let Marvel get the rights back to him & they can cross him over with a load of Marvel's other supernatural characters

Im not getting my hopes up about next year's movie

If this really dosent have anything with the first movie, are they planning on change the look of his bike? I sure hope so.

Please. They should expand on theorigin and make it better and more interesting. But deviating away from the comic books is exactly what I do not wan to see. In have hope for this movie, I really do. But if the origin is this one, it needs to be done properly.

so it is a reboot then? ...i mean i feel like this is for all intents and purposes a reboot and they just arent calling it that because its got Nic Cage again. I feel like many movies that have been rebooted couldve just used a strong sequel ...there are only a few exceptions (Batman being one--and they waited a long time to do it and did it right)...and i think they're really reboot happy..but of all movie franchises that couldve used a reboot...this is one. I wish Marvel could get the rights back and do it.

This will be horrible too. They have two dim-wit directors (have you seen Crank or Gamer) who clearly dont understand, respect, or appreciate the character...so why are they doing this? ...Crank and Gamer must not be paying too many bills. Dont get me wrong...i'm really not a fan of Ghost Rider per se (in the comics and especially not in the last film)...but it could be entertaining if done right. And it seems very clear these two shouldnt be handling this franchise.

not too hyped for this one. Kind of makes me mad that they will "reinvision" the origin. They can have set limits, but they shouldnt totally recreate it. but.....i guess it all falls on what the final project is.

I'm going to give this movie a chance out of general appreciation for the character.

I hope GR doesn't end up like the Punisher, with three movies worth of crap.

Personally, i would've recast Cage. Sorry thats my opinion. The first movie seem rushed and the story was weak. I've watched it several times ,of course, because I like Ghost Rider. I hope this one is better.

I doubt there'll be any reversion of rights, Colombia won't do that. As long as Nick Cage keeps playing Ghost Rider they'll keep churning them out. CBM fans might not like him, but Cage has a big fan base and they'll want to see whatever he's in.

I'm actually looking forward to this film. It can't be any worse than a certain film coming out about a dude in a red cape.

A family curse and a deal with the devil. What's hard to understand?

If the directors can't understand that, then they are morons and this movie will fail harder than ever before.
