Jim Starlin, creator of Thanos, took part in a panel at the Nashville Comics and Horror Festival recently and not only confirmed (again) that the Mad Titan does indeed show up in
Guardians of the Galaxy but he also talked about his liking of the casting choices for Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista).
“You know the gal who plays Gamora, I kind of like, I’ve seen her in a couple of things, I can’t think of her name off the top of my head. The wrestler they got for Drax looks pretty cool. Apparently Thanos does make some kind of appearance in there, which makes sense because Gamora is sort of his foster daughter.”
Starlin went on to also talk about how Guardians might have been a "desperation" move by Marvel Studios to have another franchise.
“I think the Guardians was sort of a desperation move to get another franchise. I mean they’re doing an Ant-Man movie. Why would you do an Ant-Man movie? There’s never been an Ant-Man book that lasted more than six issues. But it may be a good movie, and apparently all the things I’ve heard, the visuals on it are quite spectacular. But right off the top of your head you wouldn’t think Ant-Man would be the one.”
Speaking of Ant-Man's lack of solo comic books, Starlin spoke about the Guardians' struggles as a comic.
“...Guardians Of The Galaxy was one of the worst selling books for the longest time. I mean how many times did they bring that thing back and it disappear. I mean, well, you can say the same thing about the X-Men. They’ve come and gone several times.”
The most important thing to take from all of this is that Thanos is "apparently" going to appear in
Guardians of the Galaxy. Whether it's a full-blown appearance or a smaller cameo-like apearance remains to be seen. However, in the past, Starlin has been on record saying that he knows nothing about the Guardians movie so we might have to take his above comments with a grain of salt too.
Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1, 2014.
