Marvel Co-Pres Louis D'Esposito On Fan Reaction To 'The Mandarin' In IRON MAN 3

In a video interview in anticipation of the Blu-ray release of Iron Man 3, IGN asked Marvel co-president Louis D'Esposito for his thoughts of the largely negative fan reaction to the portrayal of the classic villain in the movie..

Fans just can't let this one go! Though Sir Ben Kingsley's portrayal of The Mandarin (revealed to be an actor named Trevor Slattery in the film's controversial twist) was met with high praise, the decision to use the character merely as a smokescreen for Guy Pearce's ACTUAL chief villain Aldrich Killian was...not! In the video interview below, D'Esposito says they expected some blacklash, but felt that Kingsley's performance and the quality of the twist itself would overcome it..he also mentions Iron Man 3's Box Office takings to back him up. He says he doesn't want to piss off fans, but that you can never please everyone. There's more, so be sure to watch the vid.

just seemed unnecessary to me... He seemed like a great terrorist Bin Laden type villain and it would have been sweet if The Mandarin (Kingsley) was the Leader and Aldrich turned out to be his pawn where he has immense powers and in the end Killian is killed and the Mandarin ecscapes/ arrested... More like a tactical leader then a physical threat

i think they just had a different idea then opposed to them trying to ruin the character, plus i think it worked in the context of the film and the themes of anonymity and that we create our own demons

I think comic book fans wouldnt have been as pissed if the film didnt treat the twist with such high comedy
It almost felt like "Oh hey, heres the new Mandarin, and by the way, [frick] YOU"

Im all for them changing things up. I've read the comics and have seen where those characters can go in that way...I'm excited that now cinematic-ally these characters can go in directions we dont expect.

I just watched the movie since its premiere..and honestly, aside from the twist, there's nothing HORRIBLE about IM3, some plot holes yes, but it's not Superman IV or Batman and Robin like some fanboys claim. it's watchable, even enjoyable.

plus, it did not make sense to me in the trailer why The Mandarin would go after tony stark, sure tony calls him out, but mandarin is this big uber terrorist, why would he waste his time with tony, why not go after captain america who represents the ideals he hates, the mandarin did not read the comics, he doesnt know he is supposed to be tonys archnemesis,it makes sense why malekith would go after thor or why cap would fight winter soldier, its personal ,so i was ok the idea that for the marvel cinematic universe, the mandarin was an actually person and not just a persona, he manipulated the media and the government and ruled from behind the scenes and That Aldrich Killian was The Mandarin, in that he was the person that caused the problems that tony had to overcome in the film.

JUST THINK THEY MISSED AN OPPORTUNITY TO BRING THE MANDARIN FROM THE COMICS TO THE BIG SCREEN...FOR GAWD SAKES YOU TURNED A BAD ASS INTO A FAKE ACTOR IMPERSONATING A BAD GUY...THAT WAS JUST HEARTBREAKING. IT'S LIKE WAITING FOR SUSHI AND YOU GET FRIED FISH...YES IT'S STILL FISH BUT I WANTED SUSHI, HOW HARD WAS THAT TO NOT FRY THE GHAT DAMN FISH HUH?

Using the fact it made a lot of money as proof IM-3 was good & The Mandarin "twist" was acceptable is complete bullshit.

That movie benifitted from the greatness of The Avengers..pure & simple.
Standing on its own merits & there were few..IM-3 is a weak movie.

Mandarin was mishandled--tone was too comedic throughout--babysitting a kid was dumb--drone armor is weak--man in armor is true Iron Man!--Pepper defeating the bad guy? Crap.

I don't know much about the Mandarin to really say how the character was treated. In the movie it didn't really bother me much as it was an entertaining twist. Only wished they filled the question on how A.I.M. is connected to the Ten Rings. Maybe he played both sides and it may have some backlash in future installments (probably more in Agents of SHIELD, which seems to be a great way to fill some movie plot holes)

The film sucked thus far iron man solo series is on a sour note. The first film was great two was a cluster[frick] and three seemed like it was going to return the series on a high note and went off the rails by the second and third act.If we are using money as an indicator then pirates of the Caribbean 3-4 and Spider-man3 are fantastic films because they made tons of cash(problem is they sucked)

The box office has NOTHING to do with how good a film is. If that was true, The Hurt Locker wouldn't have won at the Academy Awards. If that was true, then we'd all be praising how Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was one of the best films ever made.

The movie is a great comedy. It's just not a great Iron Man movie. And I'm getting tired of arch-enemies being killed off. IF Aldrich Killian is "The Mandarin", I hope home makes a return. Then maybe I can forgive not having Kingsley's version be the real thing, which I just don't feel was necessary to not be. He could have been an actual terrorist who was being funded by Killian and manipulated without his knowledge. Then have him get away and swear vengeance on Stark AND Killian. I don't know. Something like that. I just feel like the twist was thrown in for unnecessary joke purposes and that's aggrivating.
