The first round of reviews for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire are almost unanimously positive, with most critics hailing it as a vast improvement over the first installment. The Playlist's Todd Gilchrist even went so far as to proclaim it "the Empire Strikes Back of young adult adaptations", and "a monumental achievement". Here is where it currently sits on RT (obviously that could well change when more critics weigh in) and if you click on the image you can check out the reviews in full.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens November 22, 2013 and stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket, Lenny Kravitz as Cinna, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee, Jeffrey Wright as Beetee, Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, Donald Sutherland as President Snow, Toby Jones as Claudius Templesmith and Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair.

Ha, I have to laugh at people who run down YA novels and their movie adaptations. Do you guys think your precious superhero movies are made with adults in mind or something? The first Hunger Games has scenes of violence and in it that you simply would not get in ANY big CBM. A child gets a [frick]ing spear through her chest in it for God's sake.

The books were actually quite good. I'm not ashamed to say I read them at the ripe old age of 38, AFTER my 14 year old son suggested I read them. The first movie was a pretty good adaptation, although they wussed out with the berry threat at the end when they could have at least put the damn things in their mouths.

Still look forward to this film. (I would still rank CBMs over this tho)

Book 3 is going to have to be gutted to form a satisfying conclusion to this movie series. It's the book equivalent of THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS or POTC3.

I have to laugh. There is the sappy triangle as usual. A heroine who gives the appearance of moral and innocence (but isn't because she cooperates in the games). Why doesn't she turn on her handlers at the beginning of the games? Encourage the others to do the same. That would be courageous.

MARVELPSYCHO79, but did you think it was boring?

Katniss=Bella. I guess the middle-schoolers love it. My 14 year old daughter was thankfully more interested in seeing Thor and The Hobbit. Thus, avoiding the HG:CF issue.

Jennifer Lawrence should play the Farrah Fawcett character in a Logan's Run remake.

Eh... Kinda a SPOILER alert.. not really but it hints at plot points.
---
You'd understand the triangle if you've read the books. The triangle is a lie. You'd understand the reason she doesn't turn on her handlers if you've read the books. Her innocence and courage is a lie. It will take the final book/movie to put all the pieces together for the closed minded people out there. Its not always black and white and that's what makes it interesting.
---
*REAL SPOILER* (highlight)
In hunger games she only threatened the berries to save her ass and not fight Peta. It wasnt for LOVE. The whole courage is a facade put on by others around her USING her to incite a rebellion, she doesnt care or even want to be part of it. She is very self centered and only looking out for her own ass. Oh, and what a nice ass to look out for :)
Liverpool4life
Liverpool4life - 11/12/2013, 4:24 PM
It is a triangle nonetheless. Perception is everything. You should talk to the middle-schoolers. They aren't as refined as you.

BTW, I thought the Mockingjay was the most poorly written of the three.

So because there's a love triangle..it's sappy crap for kids? Such immaculate logic. A triangle was teased in Thor: TDW..it never went anywhere because, well, as much as I enjoyed the movie it was kinda all over the place when it came to a consistent script -- but had more focus been put on it would that have automatically degraded it? I guess I just find superhero/Harry Potter fans dismissing the far grittier, more thought provoking Hunger Games flicks as being "for kids" kinda hilarious.

Ok "Duhh, Superheroes rule, Duuuuuuh, sappy Hunger Games stuff for girls and gays"

Better?

Liverpool4life - 11/12/2013, 5:05 PM
Shout us down with how hypocritical we are. Gritty is selectively overused on this site. The SAW movies are gritty too. A thought provoking story might have shown Katniss to be more bold and less a passive survivor/quasi-collaborator.
Ineedrevelation
Ineedrevelation - 11/12/2013, 5:07 PM
better
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 11/12/2013, 5:13 PM
Gritty is not overused, it's MISUSED. The SAW movies are not gritty, they're violent..big difference. Gritty doesn't just mean dark and visceral in a visual sense, it's also about getting under the character's skins and putting a bit of weight on the story.

Anyway, if you've read the books how is it that you don't know why Katniss cooperates initially?
Liverpool4life
Liverpool4life - 11/12/2013, 5:14 PM
You brought "gays" into this. I didn't know that was part of the debate. That really brings logic to the matter.

I'm glad your a fan. I hope you enjoy your time.
Liverpool4life
Liverpool4life - 11/12/2013, 5:19 PM
Like I said. I would expect a courageous person to fight back against her handlers, rally the others.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 11/12/2013, 5:28 PM
I was just parroting the usual rubbish I see directed at the movies..wasn't implying that was something you said specifically.

She was playing ball because if she didn't her family and everyone she cared about would be executed. So fighting back at that time would not have been courageous, it would have been bloody stupid.
SmokenOaken
SmokenOaken - 11/12/2013, 5:33 PM
SPOILERS - Pfft.. Screw the Spoiler Tags!

She's just a symbol. She's not meant to be courageous. It was a fluke and the rebels took advantage of this. She doesn't even realize whats happened and doesn't even want to be this symbol. It's not until shit really hits the fan in Mockingjay that she finally shows any real signs of courage. Even though Mockingjay doesn't follow the same recipe as Hunger Games or Catching Fire, it definitely doesn't make it poorly written. Mockingjay brings to light what's really been going on the whole time. In this respect, the fact that you're gripe is Katniss isn't courageous shows that Jennifer Lawrence, the directors, and producers have got it right. You SHOULD feel that she isn't courageous. That's the point. She's the reluctant hero/symbol. One little thing she did in the first movie/book just to save her own ass, blows up and inspires a nation. All by accident. IMO, that's good stuff..
