James Franco Most Likely Won't Appear In DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

When it was announced that Rupert Wyatt, director of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, would not return for the sequel, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, it pretty much ended all chances of James Franco reprising his role as well. Hit the jump to voice your opinion.

MTV recently caught up with James "Renaissance Man" Franco and inquired about him possibly reprising his role as Dr. Will Rodman in the Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel, which will now be directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield).

MTV: Are you going to be making an appearance in "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes"?

Franco: I was going to be a small part of the next one. There was a moment when Rupert Wyatt was going to direct the second one. A lot of the human characters that were in the first movie were dead in the sequel that Rupert was going to direct. But there was one scene, between Caesar and my character, maybe even just like on a video that was left behind, but then a lot of things happened, like [former Fox co-chairman] Tom Rothman who was a big part of the first movie, left. Now Rupert's not a part of it so I don't know. My guess is I won't be in it. Nobody's talked to me since Rupert left.

Is the character essential to the sequel? He kind of is. I mean his character did create ALZ-112, which started this whole mess, and is an emotional cornerstone for Caesar. It would certainly make for a smoother bridge between the two films. As for me I'd like to see him comeback, even if it's in a smaller role.

I would like to point out that after Rupert Wyatt left, Mark Bomback was brought in by Reeves to fix the script. So there is a good chance that the script isn't finalized just yet, and that is why Franco's phone has been quiet. I guess we'll find out May 23rd, 2014, when the film is released.

Sad Franco is one of my favorite actors. At the same time they probably wouldn't necessarily need his character.

Looking foward to his OZ. He'd make a decent Wally West. Definitely make a better Gambit than Kitsch, but then again so would Jessica Biel.

Now that the Apes are free, and have begun the revolution, I don't see why he would really NEED to be in it. However, it would have much more of an emotional impact if he was captured, and Ceasar had to be the one to sign his death warrant just to show how different the ape world is going to be handled. No mercy on the humans. I'm ok with him not being a part of it, but he could definitely have a piece of it. I dunno...I just hope it's remotely as great as Rise was!

Damn, I was really hoping he'd return, even if it was just as a bridge between the two movies.

i don't like if a main character doesn't appear in a sequel, but this time i don't give a f***. Andy Serkis/Caesar is all they need for the sequel!!

if it takes place a long time after the first one than it wouldn't make sense for him to appear

I don't see it as a big deal, especially considering the Rise movie was that great. They really need a stronger script/story.

Ah well... I suppose you don't NEED the character. But it would have been nice. I'm just glad we got another reboot after Burtons abortion.

Getting a little tired of all the weird pics in articles that aren't humorous.

Captain Sensitive, lol. You're not essential either on an aggregator site. Don't act like you're important, the news would get posted with or without you. Although, I do like your cosplay articles.

Hey Nail, minor quip here: I think it comes out on May 23, not March 23.

With or without Franco, I,m very interested to see where this story is going.

There is an alternate take with him where he dies, personally, I thought that Franco had his brain off for the entire movie, he seemed very distant. He served his purpose, I'll be okay if he goes.

Well it is not that he doesn't want to, it is that no one talked to him yet. He needs to come back. The relationship is too great.

whatever, just set it years later, focus more on Caesar and the other apes, have humanity and the apes end up more on balanced terms because of the outbreak at the end of the first movie. have them try to live in peace but by the end, they end up at war with each other leading to the apes owning the planet by the end of the third movie
