Geoff Johns Confirms Mark Strong as Sinestro for Green Lantern!

The fan favorite comic author shares his thoughts on his Green Lantern set visit, and provides official word that Mark Strong will be playing Sinestro!

This past Thursday, veteran comic writer Geoff Johns was appointed as the Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment. Johns' appeal with fans and experience writing several highly acclaimed episodes TV's Smallville were more than likely the basis of this promotion. He will be an asset in bringing DC's beloved comic characters to general audiences, whether via film or television.




Johns just returned from New Orleans where he was observing the production of DC's latest mainstream comic property, Green Lantern. Through his Twitter page (Verified), he shared his thoughts with followers:


Back from an amazing trip to Green Lantern town a.k.a. New Orleans!! Ryan IS Hal. And Mark Strong is going to be a brilliant Sinestro.

Many news sources have divulged the studio's negotiations with Strong in an effort to have him join the film, but from what I've found (or failed to find) this is the first official word that Strong landed the role.

Johns went on to tweet:

Given Johns' firsthand knowledge of Green Lantern mythology, this news might placate fan that were doubtful about Ryan's casting for the role of Hal Jordan. Maybe next time he can throw a few set or costumes pictures to the eager masses.

Just a hunch - I don't think he'll wear a mask at all.

Every time I see a mock-up of a poster, the mask looks... wrong, dare I say, goofy even.

Does he really need one? (don't stone me, just throwing it out there).

Uh uh, I just gotta read up on some lantern comics already. I must say this got me excited, like really damn excited! I just want to sink my teeth into this movie so bad, when is the release date again?? :)

@KeithM: If youre are talking in regards to the fan poster Multi has displayed above in his article, then I actually find it very nice. And as LEEE said, even though the domino masks are outdated superhero attire today, it still is one of the trademarks for GL.

And before I forget: HELL F-WORD YEAH TO MARK STRONG AS SINESTRO!!!!!!! Truely my prayers have been heard! The guy is perfect for the role and will do one of DC's finest villains great justice!!

Hal looks like a rapist there.

I'm really excited to hear who they get for Kilowog. Not including Lively as Carol, I'd say Campbell has done a great job at casting this film. Reynolds is a great actor, Sarsgard is great, and Strong is awesome. I'm hoping they either get Dennis Haysbert or Clancy Brown.

I'm still on the fence about this one. I hope it's good, but I thought spiderman 3 looked awesome and look at that piece of shit.

@LEEE: I'm getting at it. Will be reading Emerald dawn all next week when I'm on the train. But it is not like I don't know shite about GL, after all Hal Jordan is one of my favourite DC characters, but I do think I will have to read some more before I can claim myself a hardcore fan of his :)
Oh, and Hell yeah Mark is gonna be great. I know you wanted Hugo Weaving but there are plenty of roles he could own in, like Brainiac!
Actually come to think of it Hugo has already been in a DC movie(V for Vendetta, in case anybody missed it), so does that get him out of the running for portraying other DC characters, which are pure DC and not under the Vertigo stamp?

I find it funny that we've pretty much never thought of or discussed Strong as Sinestro, but now that he's cast, everyone's in almost unanimous agreement that it's an awesome choice. It isn't surprising really, considering we've basically only debated between Hugo Weaving and Jason Isaacs and no one else :)

I was considering Strong as Sinestro for a long time!
Then I read it was rumored he was going to be Sinestro
on IMDB. So I put him in my last JLA casting!

But I never mentioned him here cuz I thought I would be
filleted by all the Isaacs, Weaving lovers on here! I was
right all along! Mark Strong is proving to be one hell
of a Heavy actor! He can play dark so very well!!!

After the news about Nolan taking such a creative role at DC, I'm glad to here this about Johns. Johns is a great guy for getting these characters to the screen. Here's some fingers crossed for Martian Manhunter.
