Jim Sturgess Compared ‘Star-Lord’ To ‘Han Solo’ Amid GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Auditions

Recounting his extensive process of auditioning and screen testing for Star-Lord, actor Jim Sturgess compared Guardians of the Galaxy to Star-Wars upon learning about its story. Check it out!

While endorsing his recent film, Upside Down, Jim Sturgess furthermore discussed his screen test and audition process for the lead role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy film. Despite losing the Peter Quill / Star-Lord part to Zero Dark Thirty star Chris Pratt, Sturgess told The Huffington Post:

“They’re not films that I would go and see particularly but I really started to get intrigued by it. I went to the audition and I was called back for another audition and I had a screen test and another screen test. I think I got down to the last two people. It was fun. Again, I was really, really, really excited about the idea of making a film that other people were really, really excited about seeing. I was amazed instantly by the fact that our names got put out there as a group of actors that had gone out for it and everybody was writing about it and excited about it.”

Even though Guardians of the Galaxy has been dubbed a Big Space Epic expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time, Jim Sturgess wasn’t fully aware upon auditioning. However, further down the casting process, he deemed the James Gunn-directed adaptation’s main idea.

“Then I discovered more and more about the story and it felt like more of a Star Wars than it does Spider-Man. You don’t actually get to know that much about the project. It’s all under lock and key which is crazy but obviously, it’s based on a comic. What I realized is it’s not rooted in reality. It’s up in space and the character was a space pirate of some sort so it was much more in the vein of Han Solo rather than just dressing up in a tight fitting suit. I guess your competitive nature starts kicking in. When you go for the first audition you think, ‘This is a bit of fun.’ Then you get further & further down the line & then you think, ‘Shit, maybe I really want to do this.’”

In other related micro news, actor Nick Offerman recently mentioned Guardians of the Galaxy on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno while embellishing his longtime friend and Parks and Recreation co-star Chris Pratt as a true superhuman being. Anyhow, filming starts at the end of June.

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—A big space epic featuring an unlikely cast of Marvel characters, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot and Rocket Raccoon, who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. Starring Chris Pratt & Dave Bautista & directed by James Gunn from a screenplay by James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014. In addition, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; the sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers” on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

If the concept art is anything to go by, he WON't be wearing the helmet, just the mask:

They're going to take off his helmet for the final brawl, you know, to show the emotions. Just like Spider-Man !

@OrgasmicPotatoe, and in the first Iron Man.

Anytime they are in space or on an inhospitable planet he will have to wear some sort of helmet or mask. I think it will definitely be there in some capacity. If they're on a spaceship or something he will take it off, but I think the classic helmet will have decent screen time.

Like Spidey, Iron Man, Captain America, Batman (in Batman Returns).....Actors gotta have their mugs on display on the big screen.....It's been a long time since I read a "Guardians" book - I'm guessing "Star-Lord" is completely different than the Star-Lord that was introduced back in the 70's....

Its gonna be like Thor all over again. We will complain that he doesnt wear his helmet all the time, but then we will just get used to it, lol.

Didn't seem he had much care for the character and project, so no loss here....prefer someone who really wanted it from the start and want to portray the character true to it's nature.

His helmet better not look like the new helmet from the new guardians comic. That sucked. But I'm stoked on Pratt. That was a great choice.

@Wildaniel: Sure, but for Star-Lord, he has to wear it. He's the only humanoid asset to the team. Groot, Drax, Gamora, they can all breathe under the extreme natural conditions. Rocket and Peter, they need oxygen from their own source. Pratt needs to wear the helmet, that is to say if the movie REALLY does take place in space most of the time.

Yeah, he really did go all out physically for ZDT, which is crazy considering his role was relatively small. He'll own. Can't wait for the announcement for Gamora, Rocket and Groot. Dave and Chris are excellent additions. GOTG is going to be incredible.

@AlanWarlock: Screw that. Dredd never took off his mask and neither did that guy from "V for Vendetta." Boba Fett never took off his mask. Snake Eyes never took off his mask.

@AlanWarlock, you mean StarHawk in the 70s
JusticePourTous
JusticePourTous - 3/17/2013, 1:45 PM
Yeah, but Boba Fett hardly was the main character of star wars, and the mask was V's whole deal. Dredd is kinda different, cos you can still tell it's Karl Urban behind it, and it didn't do very well, so it's not really a good example.

Covering your main actors face is a pretty big deal.
OrgasmicPotatoe
OrgasmicPotatoe - 3/17/2013, 3:35 PM
It's a big deal for those ignorant [frick]s who need to see an actor's face in order to understand what he's doing.

On a side note, est-tu français ?

I'm hoping they use the mask on Star Lord. It's iconic. Or at least it can become iconic. It's just like Spider-man or Iron Man can be anyone (they both wear masks) so can Star Lord.

The fact James Gunn is directing this is incredibly exciting, I really hope he gets the control a director of his talent deserves and isnt pushed around by Feige and his horrible mediocrity creating money men

These heroes who have to have a secret identity to protect their loved ones don't do a very good job of it, i.e. Spider-Man. Why even bother wearing a mask at all?
