UPDATED WITH QUOTE FROM ZACK SNYDER: Kevin Costner confirmed as Pa Kent in Man of Steel

Deadline is reporting that Kevin Costner is confirmed as Jonathan Kent in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel -- all we're waiting for is the press release.

"Almost a month after Deadline told you that Kevin Costner was in early talks for a lead role in Superman: Man of Steel, I hear that he has closed a deal to play Jonathan Kent, the adopted father of Clark Kent. Costner will join Henry Cavill, who is playing the title role, and Diane Lane, who is playing Martha Kent, his adopted mother," offers the report."

Of course speculation will intensify over which villain(s) will be utilized and what actors will play them. Deadline rules out the rumored Viggo Mortensen as Zod given his expected signing on to Snow White and the Huntsman, which will star Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron.

UPDATE: Director Zack Snyder has offered up this comment: "Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest superhero of all time."

seems like Snyder is doing what Nolan did when began casting Batman Begins, so i wonder what big names will play Jor-El, Lara, Brainiac, Perry, Jimmy, Lois, Dan Turpin, Maggie Sawyer, (if those characters are included in the film ofcourse)

Nolan actually went in the Superman approach on hiring big names for batman begins. He says so himself in an interview on the dvd. 4:39

Being that they're not hiring VERY old actors to play the Kents, sequels must be in the works.

Kevin Costner has about as much personality as a wooden board. He's the John Tesh of acting. This already has a predictable feel to it now that "Mr. Neat" and all his star power is involved.

CG21 is right, Caviezel for Jor- El, he is the man and has some (a lot of) resemblance with Cavill in fact the has been father and son before, el Conde de Montecristo, remember. so HELLO MEGAN ups sorry HELLO SNYDER.Bring a good biological father like Costner as adopter father.

Thank god Snyder is directing and Nolan is "Godfathering" this project. Singer needs to sit back and take notes as he learns how to make a superhero movie. As much as we want the storyline and character development to be deep... we need hand to hand fist crushing action and clearly illustrated displays of the LIMITs of their powers. Singer tried to make a romantic drama that happened to star Superman!

WB lost the film rights to his krypton origin. Don't any of you remember the legal battle over Superman film rights. No Krypton, No Jor-El, No Lara. This is how they're resolving that.

If anyone wants to see Costner in somewhat of a Pa Kent role I highly suggest seeing 'The War'. Great movie.

Surround Cavill with an all-star cast as insurance. Smart move. Still doesn't sell it any better for me.
