In an interview with MTV Splash Page, the writer best known for his work on projects such as Batman: The Animated Series, ustice League and the Batman: Arkham Asylum video game has revealed that he's part of the creative team behind the upcoming animated TV series which hits Disney XD in Fall 2011.

On The Creative Team Behind The Series:

" We're really all just going to go off each other's energy. Brian's work is a great part of the inspiration for the series, and the Man Of Action writers are going to handle the bulk of the episode scripting. Everything is going to be produced under the watchful eye of Jeph Loeb. We had an early meeting last week with myself, Jeph, and a few of the directors and designers, and I think everybody's on the same page with what we want the show to look like and the feel of the show."

On How Faithful It Will Be To The Comic Book Series:

"It's 50/50. There are elements that are going to come directly from the comics, and there are elements that are just going to take it into an entirely new and different direction — and yet, they're going to harken back to that particular iteration of Spider-Man."

On What We Can Expect To See In Terms Of Characterization And Storylines:

"We're going to be pairing him up with new and different Marvel characters. There's going to be a lot of guest-star action, and there's going to be a redefinition of Peter Parker within the Spider-Man world. We're going to change a few things — nothing too dramatically, but you look at the Spider-Man concept from the early '60s and you take a look at where teens are now, and you realize you can't really go back and redo what was done so well in the comics. You have to ask, "What if this was all happening today? How do you redefine 'With great power comes great responsibility?' How do you redefine the villains of that world and the supporting characters?""

"You also don't want to repeat the same old tropes. As much as I love elements of Spider-Man's past, I don't really want to go back in and retell the Gwen Stacy and Green Goblin story in animation just so I can do my take on it. I don't want to redo the first Spider Slayer story. I don't want to redo some of those classic Lee/Romita and Lee/Ditka stories just for the sake of seeing them rendered in animation. For now, I just want to approach Spider-Man with fresh eyes, taking a few things we know about him and just doing a new spin on the concept. I think old-time fans will find what we've done with the character to be pretty good and thoughtful, because we're not out to junk-up Spider-Man. That's not our intent."

On "Redefining" Peter Parker/Spider-Man:

"It's sort of like what Brian did with the whole 'Ultimate Spider-Man' idea. He just looked at it from a new perspective. There were things that made the fans sort of sit up and say, 'Hey, I never thought of that before, but it really does work with Spider-Man's universe.' That's the same thing we're doing here. We're also taking a much different approach visually with the way we show how Spider-Man moves and works and acts within this new world. It's going to be a complete change as far as the visualization of what it's like to be Spider-Man."

On How Many Episodes Will Be In The First Season:

"There's 26 episodes in front of us, and we're breaking it into two increments."

What happened to Spectacular Spider-Man?
They need to bring it back.

Nice find JoshW. Just the fact that it's Ultimate, well, I don't have too much hope for it. Unless it's like Ultimate Spider-Man the game, where they change things for the better. The 90's Spidey show will forever remain the best.

I couldnt agree more Destroyer! :) I grew up watching the 90's cartoon and nothing can compete with that IMO! (although the MTV series that followed on from the first movie was actually pretty awesome) I will give this series a chance though...whether I'll actually enjoy it or not will most likely depend on the animation style - less cartoony than Spectacular Spider-Man would make me happy!

I was psyched to here Dini, the one behind Batman getting a hold of a Marvel cartoon. Then I read further down and read Jeph Loeb was involved and gave up all hope after he made a mess out of the Hulk comics.

I liked the 90's series, as well as Spider-Man Animated and Spectacular Spider-Man.I think I'm going to like this as well.

Brian Michael Bendis as writer and producer and team ups with other heroes. That's something that's been missing from Spider-Man shows. He is great when you put him with other heroes. It'll be like The Brave and the Bold, but probably more entertaining.

I trust Paul Dini to make this new Spidey series something really interesting and good. I'll definitely be watching this.

Too bad Spectacular had to be cancelled. The drawing style was goofy, but I really enjoyed the stories. I also really liked their take on the Green Goblin.

Leee: I hope we don't see the "Hulk Goblin"! That was one of the few things I've REALLY disliked in Spidey's Ultimate series.

I loved the 90's series but Spectacular Spider-Man was one of the best animated shows in a long while.

Why is there a new Spidey cartoon every few years? I love the character, one of my favorites, but c'mon?! I'm glad Dini is involved, but wasn't Spectacular Spider-Man basically Ultimate Spider-Man?
Eviltwin
Eviltwin - 8/4/2010, 4:04 PM
Hey Josh,

Great find buddy!

I didn't know Dini was involved in this at all. This gives me some hope the new cartoon will be good.

I grew up watching ALL the cartoon versions of Spidey, and I'm hoping like that the art direction will be a hell of a lot better than Spectacular was and even better writing that it did too. (Not saying SSM's writing was bad, it was really good, I just want more and even better).

Still not sold on the Ultimate thing, but if it's a blend of original/ultimate and something new then maybe it'll be good.

Like JoshW said, it had better be a lot less cartoony for me as well.

Well said Tea!

It'll be great to see other Marvel heroes coming in again, like those you mentioned and from the 90's TAS as well.

anybody who says the 90s series was better than the Spectacular Spider-Man series is in utter denial and has too much nostalgic factor shrouding their vision.
Spectacular Spider-man was a bit cartoony but it made it up with amazing storylines and solid character development.
Name one episode of the 90s series that can top the Opera Episode of Spectacular Spider-man.
No not the one where Red Skull is Electro's son, or the 70% of the other episodes where Kingpin is in it. Or the ones where Hob Goblin premiered before Green Goblin.

Ya, great episode for sure. Yep Chameleon is the baddy in that one.

Lots of great guest stars in Amazing Friends that I remember. Captain America, Iron Man (who gives them the tech for their apartment), Black Knight, Dr. Doom, lots more too. A couple of great ones with the X-men like you said.

Ya, I think I read somewhere they gave him the Aussie accent to give it more of that 'international" flavour. Like Canada isn't international or anything, lol. But, being Canadian, I'm not so sure I'd like to hear a typical Canadian accent on him ;)

No Moon, no more Spectacular Spider-Man. Apparently the animation rights went back Marvel and they are doing they cartoon they want.

Anybody remember this Spidey from The Electric Company?

Atta boy!!! I though it was pretty cool too, even better than what we ended up getting. I think it may have had something to do with the expense of the animation or something.
