BOX OFFICE: $19M For Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes On Friday; On Its Way To $50M!

The actual numbers for Friday are in, and it seems that FOX and Rupert Wyatt's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes opened bigger than expected with $19M compared to previously reported $14M. More after the jump!

Rupert Wyatt's latest film Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes starring James Franco, Freida Pinto and Andy Serkis playing Caesar, opened stronger than expected on Friday with $19 million compared to yesterday's report of $14 million. Now, since the film is getting good buzz from most of the critics, word of mouth should help its weekend gross. From Deadline:

"The far better reviewed Apes is faring stronger with a very healthy $19M Friday (including a low-key $1.254M midnights in only 1,124 locations) for a projected $50M weekend or even higher."

Film had a reported budget of $93 million, which is not a lot when you look at Thor and Green Lantern's budget, and almost every big film this year was playing in 3D. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is a 2D film, and usually 3D adds $8-10M. As for Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger...It's expected to collect another $13M for the weekend and with that it will be on $143M in domestic box office. International numbers will be available probably tomorrow. Here is a list of top 5 films for this weekend, thanks to Deadline:

1. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes - [3,648 Theaters]
Friday $19M, Estimated Weekend $50M

2. The Smurfs - [3,395 Theaters]
Friday $5.7M (-56%), Estimated Weekend $18M, Estimated Cume $73M

3. Cowboys & Aliens - [3,754 Theaters]
Friday $4.6M (-64%), Estimated Weekend $15M, Estimated Cume $66.6M

4. The Change-Up (Universal) NEW [2,913 Theaters]
Friday $4.5M, Estimated Weekend $13M

5. Captain America - [3,620 Theaters]
Friday $3.7M, Estimated Weekend $13M, Estimated Cume $143.2M

Stay tuned for updates!

Yeah, as I mentioned in the last box office thread, Ryan Reynold's stock in Hollywood is falling. Deadline beats up the idea that he's a star that can open a film. It doesn't encourage WB to green light a sequel with him in the lead, surely.

i think i'm gonna try to see it next week.

When I heard they were making a POTA prequel/reboot, I was as skeptical as most nerds. But I have to say I liked the trailers, Caesar seemed like a fascinating combination of Andy Serkis´ performance with digital FX, and the tone seemed a lot more serious and dramatic than the maligned Tim Burtonremake. Now it´s getting positive reviews and looks like it will open better than expected. I´m actually looking forward to it.

it was good... the ending kinda made it somehow pointless for me

God how correct I was about Cowboys & ALiens and Captain AMerica.
The former has bombed and the latter is a commercial failure too with a mustering $150-$160 million take.

Captain America is a hit but not a blockbuster and even considered a flop in International markets.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is an awesome movie. If you're still on the fence about it, definitely go see it.

Rango: what are you talking about? Captain America doesn't finish releasing in some places until OCTOBER...this movie will make money. It's not a flop, it will probably do four hundred million world wide. I think Cowboys & Aliens make money too...Neither of these movies is Green Lantern terrible.

Definitely one of the best movies of the summer. The cast was great and the story seemed to have moved lots of the people in the audience.Saw it earlier in the day yesterday and most of the theater clapped at the end. Great film, worth the money to go see it.

Just so people know, by those estimates above Cap's domestic total will be all of $2m behind Thor's domestic total after the same number of days in release. It has been doing less weekend business than Thor but making it up with more weekday business. In attendance it's running well ahead of Thor, which sold a far greater percentage of 3D tickets. It'll pass X-Men First Class before next weekend, making it the #2 comic book film behind Thor this year.

It's doing just fine.
